Roger G. Clarke, M.D., FACP, formerly of 2610 Deveron Circle, Quincy, passed away on Monday, September 6, 2010 at the Sunny View Care Center in Ankeny, Iowa.
Dr. Clarke was born February 11, 1915 in Tamora, Nebraska, the son of Harry Downer Clarke and Gladys Gold Clarke. On September 12, 1942, he married Kathryn Ellen Rohol in St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Carlisle, PA. She survives.
After graduating from the University of Nebraska, Dr. Clarke attended Northwestern University Medical School in Chicago, graduating in the class of 1940. While waiting to be inducted into the armed forces he interned at Evanston Hospital and continued in a rotating residency. Dr. Clarke then entered the service as a 1st Lt. in the Medical Corps, taking the one month indoctrination course for new medical officers at Carlisle Barracks, Carlisle, PA. He was then selected to remain at the Barracks to continue as an instructor in the school, serving there until he was discharged with the rank of Major in 1946.
Dr. Clarke then returned to Chicago to complete his residency in internal medicine at Wesley Memorial Hospital, completing the required three years in 1948. During that time he earned a Masters of Science in Pathology. Following this he came to Quincy and joined the Physician's and Surgeon's Clinic. He continued as an internist until retirement in 1984.
Dr. Clarke was on the medical staff of both local hospitals, was a member of the Adams County Medical Society, the Illinois State Medical Society, the AMA, the American Diabetes Association, the American Geriatrics Society, and was a Fellow of the American College of Physicians. His hobbies included flying as a private pilot, golf and bridge.
Surviving in addition to his wife Kathryn, are two sons, Stephen and his wife Juli of Santa Fe, NM; and David and his wife Jane of Ankeny, IA; five grandchildren, Kate Moore and her husband Erik, Daniel , John, Lauren & Matthew Clarke; twin great-grandsons, Will and Luke Moore; and a sister, Virginia Cattle of Seward, NE. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Services: 10:00 am Friday, September 10, 2010 at St. Peters Catholic Church with Father John Burnette officiating. Burial will be in Greenmount Cemetery.
Visitation: 9-10 am Friday at St. Peters Catholic Church.
