"Marian will be greatly missed. Our family offers support to our cousins Brian & Maureen and their families. Our deepest sympathies."
Marian Irene Kurfman Mayfield, 92, died on Sunday, January 27, 2013 at Good Samaritan Home where she had resided for most of 3 years.
She was born on December 22, 1920 in Ferguson Valley, Brown County Illinois, the ninth child of Ross and Elizabeth Wing Kurfman. She attended Ferguson Valley School through the eighth grade and began High School at Clayton Illinois; however, due to illness in the family she had to return home soon after to help care for her 5 younger siblings. Later she worked as a mother's helper for various family members until her marriage to Turner Mayfield on April 26, 1939. They set up housekeeping in the Rock House near Siloam Illinois. A daughter and a son were born to them while living in that area. Later they farmed in several locations in Adams County and Marion County Missouri, before buying their farm near Plainville in 1969.
They were faithful members of Calvary Baptist Church, joining in the late 40's. Marian worked in the nursery there long enough to have cared for 2 generations of children in some families. She loved babies and as she got older so enjoyed each new member of the family. A wonderful cook who rarely referred to a cookbook, she was known for her fried chicken and pies. She cooked for hay hands, church dinners, and best of all, she put 3 great meals on the table each day for her family. As the grandchildren came along she enjoyed having them 'help' her bake.
Marian is survived by a brother, Alvin Kurfman of Quincy and a sister Jean Hamann and her husband Lester, also of Quincy, her daughter, Maureen Mayfield of Robstown Texas, and her son Brian Mayfield and his wife Linda of Quincy who have lovingly cared for her for many years. She is also survived by 12 grandchildren, Beth Rexford of Clare, Il, Leah Fultz of Cumberland Va, Rachel Vinyard and husband Dan of Wheat Ridge Co, Anna Olson and her husband Larry of Montpelier Va, Frank Laccone and his wife Shara of Kingsland Ga, Melissa Ledbetter and her husband Nate of Atlanta Ga, Joshua Mayfield and his wife Brooke of Tucker Ak, Caleb Mayfield and his wife Julie of San Pedro Ca, and Sarah Mayfield of Quincy, 7 great grandchildren, Sherry Lopez, Scott Rexford, Jacob Kuzma, Jacquelynn Vinyard, Lucas and Cassady Olson, Isaac and Talon Laccone, Selah, Shiloh, Levi, and Zeke Ledbetter, Noah and Elin Mayfield, and Toby Mayfield, and 6 great, great grandchildren, Noel, Olivia, Jaanai and Juliana Cornejo and Elliott and Dominic Lopez.
She was preceded in death by her husband Turner Mayfield in 1997, one brother, Clyde Kurfman, and 10 sisters, Ruth Butler, Lurance Kurfman, Esther Bennett, Dolly Kurfman, Bertha McPhail, Pearle Baxa, Margaret Davis, Vivian Smith, Evangeline Dougherty, and Lois Jones. "I just now found out about my Great Aunt Marian going on to Glory! I loved that woman so much! I have nothing but the fondest memories of her and hope to be like her in my old age. The last time I saw her, I peeked in her room at Good Sam first, she had her back to us & she was reading her Bible. A beautiful picture and it sums her up completely! I will miss her, but am comforted in knowing I will see her again someday in Heaven! Prayers for the family. XOXO"
