Ellis Roate

Ellis Rae Roate, age 74, of 1525 Curtis Creek, Quincy, IL died on Friday, May 24, 2013 at 6:25 a.m. He was born July 2, 1938 in Versailles, IL, the son of Randall and Frances Steiger Roate.

He was a 1956 graduate of Brown County High School. He moved to Quincy in 1958, where he worked in sales at Handi-Rack (Jaydon) for 23 years before becoming an independent insurance agent with Farmer's Insurance. After retirement in 1998, Ellis enjoyed golf, fishing, cooking, music of all kinds, especially strumming on his guitar. In his young adult years, he enjoyed competitive archery. He also enjoyed woodworking and home improvement projects. Most of all he enjoyed spending time with family and friends. He was a member of Melrose Chapel United Methodist Church.

Mr. Roate married Marge Ozley in 1991; she survives. He is also survived by five daughters, three of which are from a previous marriage, and their families: Christine Roate Tailford of Phoenix, AZ; Lindy Roate Rehrig (Troy) of Quincy, IL; Angela Roate Cooper (Vinnie) of Belleville, IL; Emily Ozley Robbearts (Ed), of Quincy, IL; and Suzanna Ozley (Garth Ellenburg) of Auburn, AL. He is survived by twelve grandchildren and one great grandchild. He is also survived by two brothers, four sisters and their families: David Roate (Kathie) and Von Roate of Versailles, IL; Winona Roate Crooks of Silvis, IL; Faye Roate Henricks (George) of Rushville; Martha Roate Thompson (Jim) of Weldon, IL; and Cam Roate Burton of Jacksonville, IL, as well as many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Charles and Tom Roate, and a sister, Mary Roate Hester.

Services: A celebration of Ellis' life will be conducted by the Rev. Ron George at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, May 28, 2013 at Melrose Chapel United Methodist Church.

Visitation: Tuesday, May 28, 2013 from 9:30 - 11:00 a.m. at Melrose Chapel United Methodist Church.

Burial: Greenmount Cemetery

Memorials: Family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Chaddock Children's Foundation, Alzheimer's Association or Melrose Chapel United Methodist Church.
