Lorna R. Vollmer, 85, retired St. Mary Hospital Administrator, 1507 Curtis Creek, Quincy, died Sunday, October 21, 2001 at 6:30 am in Blessing Hospital.
She was born September 28, 1916 in Adams County, Illinois, the daughter of George and Carolyn Weisheit Rippel. On October 15, 1949, she married Milton W. Vollmer in Luther Place Memorial Church,Washington D.C. He preceded her in death on June 26, 1990.
She was a 1933 graduate of Quincy Senior High School, Gem City College and American University, Washington D.C. Prior to marriage Mrs. Vollmer was an Administrative Officer in the International Monetary Fund in Washington D.C.. She served a year in Berlin and Frankfort, Germany as a Personnel Officer for the U.S. Treasury after WWII. Mrs. Vollmer retired in 1981 after 25 years at the former St. Mary Hospital where she was Assistant Administrator.
In 1992 she was awarded the Women of Achievement Award by the YWCA for business and industry. She was a member of Luther Memorial Church. Both Mr. & Mrs. Vollmer enjoyed foreign travel and traveled extensively. She served on the board of St. Mary Hospital, was a Director and Trustee on the Foundation of Franciscan Sisters of the Poor, and she was a member of the St. Mary Women's Auxiliary, YWCA, American Red Cross, American Cancer Society, Women's City Club, Altrusa International, Quincy Garden Club, Grace Whipple Chapter, Order of Eastern Star, and American Society of Hospital Administrators.
Survivors include 3 nieces and 2 nephews, Judith Haberhorn, Ponte Verdra, FL, Robert Rippel, Baltimore, MD, Douglas Welfare, Elkins, West VA, Roberta Smallwood, New Freedom, PA, Shirley Berger, Pleasant Valley, IA, and very special friends, Valerie, Ronald, James and Tracey Anders, Quincy. She also was preceded in death by parents, sister Ellaree Welfare, and two brothers, W. F. Rippel and Herbert Rippel in infancy.
Funeral Services will be 11:00 am Wednesday, October 24, at the Luther Memorial Church, Rev. Jan Bengston officiating. Burial in Greenmount Cemetery, Quincy, Illinois. There will be no visitation, but friends are invited to the services. Memorial contributions may be made to Luther Memorial Church or the charity of the donor's choice. Hansen-Spear Funeral Directors are in charge of arrangements.
