Dr. Edgar Hayden Keys, Jr., 88, of 2121 Jersey died Thursday, January 3, 2002 at 2:45 am at the St. Vincent Hospice in Indianapolis, Indiana.
He was born September 3, 1913 in St. Louis, Missouri, the son of Dr. Edgar Hayden, Sr. and Elizabeth Rauh Keys. On June 29, 1940, he married Katherine Stuart in Webster Groves, Missouri. She survives.
In 1935 he received his A.B. degree from Harvard University. He received his M.D. degree from Washington University School of Medicine in 1939. He served his internship at St. Luke's Hospital and his OB-GYN Residency at Barnes Hospital in St. Louis.
Dr. Keys was in active duty in World War II and discharged with the rank of Major. He was a Hospital Surgeon with the allied military forces in Europe and the Middle East receiving one Bronze star. He also was in surgical service in the US Army Reserve.
He came to Quincy in 1948 and was associated with the Physicians and Surgeons Clinic from 1948 to 1983 as Gynecologist-Obstetrician. He assisted in the birth of about 7,000 babies during those years. From 1983 to 1988 he served as the first medical director of Blessing Hospice of which he was particularly proud. He was Diplomate of the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology, a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, Founding Fellow American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, a member of the American Medical Association, the Illinois State Medical Association and the Adams County Medical Society. He served as chairman of the department of OB-GYN at Blessing and St. Mary Hospitals. He also served as President of Blessing Hospital Medical Staff, and was a member of Blessing Hospital Board of Trustees, Chairman of Blessing Hospital Foundation and a board member of Blessing - Rieman College of Nursing.
In addition to his wife he is survived by 2 sons: Peter Hayden Keys and his wife Laurian, Zionsville, Indiana, John Nicholas "Nick" Keys and his wife Karen, Littleton, CO, 1 daughter: Elizabeth Keys Bollow and her husband Lee,Jr., Springboro, OH, 7 grandchildren: Alexandra Keys Meissner and her husband Justin T., Evans Mills, NY, Nancy Katherine Keys Smith and her husband Timothy A., Indianapolis, IN, Kathleen Patricia Keys, Littleton, CO, Elizabeth Stuart Keys, Littleton, CO, Jane Hayden Keys, Littleton, CO, Christopher Scott Bollow, Springboro, OH, Thomas Nicholas Bollow, Springboro, OH. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Private funeral services will be held. Visitation will be Sunday, January 6, 2002 from 4-7 pm in the Hansen-Spear Funeral Home. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery, Kirkwood, Missouri. Memorials may be given to the Blessing Foundation for Hospice.
