C. Ward Buzzard, 86, a well known retired Quincy businessman and civic leader and formerly at 1671 Kentucky, died Sunday morning, January 13, 2002 at 3:45am at Clark Lindsey Village, Urbana, Illinois where he and his wife , Dorothy "Dodee" Haddenhorst Buzzard have resided since June, 1999.
He was born February 18, 1915 in Altamont, Illinois, the son of Curtis W. Buzzard and Nellie R. Watson Buzzard. He married January 24, 1942 in Urbana, Illinois, and his wife survives.
He was a graduate of Altamont High School and a 1941 graduate of the University of Illinois in Agriculture and Economics. He served in the US Air Force in WWII from May, 1942 to September, 1945 spending most of his time in England supporting the European Campaign. Before moving to Urbana, he was a long-time member and elder of the Ellington Memorial Presbyterian Church in Quincy. He was elected president of the Quincy Area Council of Christian Churches. He was an active member and a former president of the Kiwanis Club of Quincy and the Lions Club of Payson, IL. Mr. Buzzard was a long time Country Companies insurance agent, and was president of Quincy Life Underwriters Association. In 1973, he received the Herbert Hendricks Award for community service from the West Central Illinois Association of Life Underwriters, and in 1979, the National Quality Award from the National Association of Life Underwriters. He was Organization Director for Adams County Farm Bureau, and he served on the Adams County Heart Fund as its President and Rural Chairman in 1972. He also assisted with the YMCA fund drive.
Survivors in addition to his wife are three children, six grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Children include: Beverly Ann Friese and husband Michael L., Urbana, IL; Curtis Alan Buzzard and wife Suzanne Heidbreder Buzzard, Downingtown, PA; George Richard Buzzard and wife Elizabeth Ann Garrett Buzzard, Herrin, IL. Grandchildren and great grandchildren include: Joelle Friese McCully, husband Daniel R. and children Riley, Michael, and Kathyrn McCulley, Champaign, IL; April Friese, Urbana, IL; Curtis A. Buzzard, Jr., wife Terri, and children Katy, Carolyn and Anna Buzzard,Alexandria, VA; Christina Buzzard Hamilton, husband Dan, and daughter Abbey Hamilton, Downingtown, PA; David Buzzard, and Elizabeth Buzzard, both of Herrin, IL. He is also survived by one brother, Dwight Buzzard and wife Ann, Atlamont, IL, and 2 sisters: Helen Buzzard Shelton and husband Earl, Brownstown, IL; Cleo Buzzard Schroeder and husband Kenneth, Normal, IL. He was preceded in death by his brother Forrest Gene Buzzard; a sister, Lila Buzzard Goodson, and an infant son, John Brian.
A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, January 16 at 3:00 pm at Clark Lindsey Village, The family will receive friends following the service. Funeral Services will be Thursday, January 17, 2002 at 3:00 pm in the Hansen-Spear Funeral Home, Rev. Richard McFarlin officiating. Burial will be in Greenmount Cemetery, Quincy, Illinois. Visitation will be Thursday from 1 pm -3 pm at the Hansen-Spear Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to First Presbyterian Church of Urbana or Ellington Memorial Presbyterian Church of Quincy.
