Dr. James Cravens

Dr. James H. Cravens, age 83, of 1440 North 10th, and formerly of 62 Lincoln Hill, Quincy, died Sunday morning, January 19, 2003 at 2:50 AM in St. Vincent's Home.

He was born July 11, 1919 in St. Louis, Missouri, the son of Dr. Harvey Mudd and Marie Zingre Cravens. On February 12, 1944, he married Ann Schnake in East St. Louis, MO. She survives.

Dr. Cravens was a graduate of Collinsville High School, and received his bachelor degree from the University of Illinois and his medical degree from Washington University Medical School. He served in the US Army in 1943 and then was the Captain of the Army Medical Corps from 1944 to 1946. He served his medical internship at the University of Chicago and his pediatric residency at St. Louis Children's Hospital, completing his program in 1948. While completing his residency training in 1946-1948 he was also in part time practice in Collinsville, IL and an instructor at Washington University School of Medicine.

Jim joined the pediatric department of the Physicians and Surgeons Clinic in September of 1948, and retired in 1990. His forty-one years of continuous patient care was one of the longest terms of practice in the QP& S Clinic's 52 year history. He was Chairman of the Board and Director at the Clinic for many years. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, the Salvation Army Advisory Board, and the Rotary Club of Quincy where he had been president from 1953-1954, and was a Paul Harris Fellow. He was a diplomate for the American Board of Pediatrics, a Fellow with American Academy of Pediatrics, a member of the American Medical Association, past president of the Illinois Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics, past president of the Illinois Downstate Pediatric Society, Illinois State Medical Society, past president of the Adams County Medical Society, headed the Swanberg Medical Foundation since 1972.

Jim was honored as "Illinois Pediatrician of the Year" in 1987. One of his past "notable" achievements was winning a third place medal for drum solo at the National High School Band Contest in Cleveland, Ohio in 1936. His hobbies were golf, photography, travel and gardening.

"Dr. Cravens was a qualified physician whose good humor helped him maintain an excellent relationship with the children who were his patients and their mothers," said Bill Sullivan, administrator of Quincy Physicians and Surgeons Clinic. "Forty-one years of continuous patient care is magnificent. His was one of the longest terms of practice in QP&S Clinic's 52-year history.

Survivors in addition to his wife are 3 children, Patricia Kiser and her husband Dr. James, Woodstock, VA; Carol Johnson and her husband Robert, North Myrtle Beach, SC; James Charles Cravens and his wife Mitra, Mission Viejo, CA; 5 grandchildren, Eric Johnson, Columbus, Ohio; , Mark and Christopher Johnson, North Myrtle Beach, SC; Tiffany and Shannen Cravens, Mission Viejo, CA. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services will be Thursday, January 23rd at 10:30 AM in the First Presbyterian Church with Rev. Rodney Bakker and Mr. Kevin McGinnis officiating. Burial in Sunset Cemetery. The family will receive friends Wednesday, January 22nd from 3-5 pm at the Hansen-Spear Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to Rotary Foundation, the Salvation Army, the First Presbyterian Church, or Blessing Foundation for Hospice.
