John E. Schnaufer

John E. Schnaufer, 85, 2245 Spruce, Quincy, died Tuesday, April 15, 2003 at 2:05 a at the Blessing Hospital.

He was born June 3, 1917 in Bethel, Missouri, the son of W. F. and Lydia Christman Schnaufer. On October 3, 1948, he married his beloved wife Emily Marie King in Hannibal, MO. She survives.

His long eventful life was filled with many highlights: Proudly he served his country in the Army Air Corps in WWII, in the highly decorated 33rd Troop Carrier Squadron. He attended most of their reunions. He was an active life member of the DAV and was proud to be able, his many years, to volunteer at the Illinois Veterans Home. He was especially proud that his eldest grandson, Abe, is a cadet at the United States Air Force Academy.

He was known for his workmanship and skilled at business. He was a master candy maker and operated stores and kitchens in several states and for GoMels KarmelKorn. He truly enjoyed how much people enjoyed his confections. Additionally, he worked for Motorola for 23 years as an inspector and past president of the Fireman's Club. Also, he worked with his son at Lawn Solutions, and he operated Village Green with his family.

As an avid gardener, he was known for his large vegetable and flower garden. He traveled extensively with his wife to visit with family. John loved to attend various church's services, and he loved to talk with family and friends.

Survivors in addition to his wife are 1 daughter; Joyce Schnaufer and her husband Richard Reinhardt, Cedar Grove, NJ; 1 son, John W. Schnaufer and his wife Ruth Lohrenz, Quincy; 4 grandchildren, Abe Schnaufer and Zac Schnaufer of Quincy, Kate and Will Reinhardt, of Cedar Grove, NJ; 1 sister, Oneita Gommels, Quincy; nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral Services will be Tuesday at 9:30 am in the Hansen-Spear Funeral Home and at 10:00 am in St. Boniface Catholic Church, Rev. John Kennedy and Rev. John Carberry officiating. Visitation will be from 4 - 7 pm at the funeral home with a Wake service at 6:30 pm. Burial will be in Quincy Memorial Park. Memorial contributions may be made to the Leukemia/ Lymphoma Society or the charity of the donor's choice.
