Rev. Harley M. Smith, age 84, 2512 Monroe, Quincy, died Saturday, May 31, 2003 at Blessing Hospital.
He was born November 30, 1918 in Asbury, Missouri, the son of Merle Smith and Anna Cline Smith. On March 3, 1940, he married Edith T. Soper in Dallas, Texas. She survives .
Rev. Smith was a graduate of Jasper, Missouri High School and a graduate of Southwest Texas Altadena School. He attended Southern California University. He was a member and retired minister of Bethel Assembly of God Church. Among the many churches he served is Marlin, TX in 1940; Perry, IA in 1943; DesMoines, IA in 1945; Quincy in 1947; Alton, IL in 1953; Quincy in 1957; Pasadena, CA in 1958 and LaPalma CA in 1969. He returned to Quincy in 1976 and formed Trinity Church here in 1988.
Survivors in addition to his wife are a son, James L. Smith and his wife Martha, Quincy; 6 grandchildren, Michael Eugene Press and his wife Daphne, Pleasant Hope, MO; Robert James Press, Quincy; Steven Edward Press, San Diego, CA; Tracy Todd Smith and his wife LaNette, Tulsa,OK; Melissa Leigh Novaez, Skokie, IL; Cassandra Lynn Smith, Quincy; 3 great grandchildren Allison Harlene and Blake Michael Press, Pleasant Hope, MO; and Elizabeth Bergen Smith, Tulsa, OK; 1 sister, Evelyn Sample, Springfield, MO; and 1 sister-in-law, Selma Smith, Dallas, TX.
He was preceded in death by his parents, 2 daughters Brenda Louise and Edith Harlene and a brother Victor.
Funeral Services will be 11 A.M. Wednesday, June 4, at the Bethel Assembly of God Church, Rev. Barry N. Clair and Rev. Greg Fulmer officiating. Burial in Greenmount Cemetery, Quincy, Illinois. The family will receive friends from 4 to 7 P.M. Tuesday at the Hansen-Spear Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to Bethel Assembly of God Church.
