Carl Wayne Richards, age 85, of 1123 Shady Acres Lane, Quincy died Sunday, February 8, 2004 at 1:16 pm in the Hannibal Regional Hospital.
He was born May 9, 1918 on a farm near Canton, Missouri, the son of Addison Scott and Rosa Lee Baker Richards. On November 11, 1939, he married Clifton Evangeline Johnson in Canton, MO. They lived in Ursa for 20 years until moving to Quincy in 1964. She preceded him in death on May 9, 2003.
He worked briefly for a power company in Missouri before serving in the US Navy during WWII. Carl served aboard anti-submarine ships in both the Atlantic and the Pacific, and rose to become Chief Electrician's Mate.
After the war, Mr Richards went to work for Porter Electric. Later, Joe Heeger of Heeger Electric offered him a job operating an electric motor repair department. He and his wife, Clifton, opened their electric motor repair shop in 1954 in Ursa. The company moved to Quincy, and Richards Electric Motor Company grew to become one of the largest electric motor repair shops in the area.
He was a member of Vermont Street United Methodist Church, Quincy Noon Optimist Club, Electrical Apparatus Service Association, Ursa Lions Club, and was on the board of the Quincy Area Chamber of Commerce. He earned his pilot's license in 1970 and enjoyed traveling to the Ozarks to fish and relax with his wife.
Survivors include his sister-in-law, Betty Richards, Sweet Springs, MO; nieces and nephews, Lynn Richards and his wife, Ellen, of Kansas City, MO; Ginny Richards of Springfield, IL; Kirt Brinkley and his wife, Karma of LaGrange, MO; Barbara Richards Tripp and her husband, John, of Quincy; Norm Richards and his wife, Linda, of St. Charles, MO; 9 great nieces and nephews, Allen Brinkley of Maywood, MO, Kara Brinkley of Columbia, MO, Sara Tripp Betz and Meredith Tripp of Quincy, Brent and Allison Richards of St. Charles, MO, and Scott, David and Todd Richards of Kansas City, MO; 1 great great niece and 2 great great nephews. He was also preceded in death by three brothers, Clyde, Harold and Keith Richards and a sister, Ruth Snowhill.
Funeral Services will be Thursday morning at 10 am at the Hansen-Spear Funeral Home, Rev. David Alberts and Rev. George Youtzy officiating. Burial will be in Forest Grove Cemetery, Canton, Missouri. Visitation will be Wednesday from 4 until 8 pm at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Vermont Street United Methodist Church or Sunset Home.
