Richard W. Summers, age 80 of 1712 Summers Lane, Quincy died Thursday, August 25, 2005 at 7:10 pm in Blessing Hospital.

He was born August 22, 1925 in Ft. Madison, IA the son of Wilmer R. and Hazel Salls Summers. He married Connie Guess on July 30, 1955 in St. Joseph, MO. She survives.

He served in the U.S. Army during WWII with the 43rd Cavalry from November, 1943 to November 1945 in Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe campaigns and was awarded 4 Bronze Stars. He worked construction in Guam and in California before returning to Quincy in 1957 to farm in Riverside Township.

He was a member of the Methodist faith and attended Ellington Presbyterian Church. He was a member of Adams County Farm Bureau, Moose Lodge #986, Eagles Lodge, V. F. W. and the American Legion Post #37. He enjoyed gardening especially his tomatoes, dancing, traveling and seeing most of the United States and Canada. He loved to be with his family, especially his grandchildren.

Survivors include four daughters, Cheryl Koenig and her husband David; Vicky Meyers and her husband Billy; Janet Pattison and her husband Richard, and Kimberly Wellman and her husband Kent, all of Quincy; 9 grandchildren, Amanda Ream and her husband Chad of Bowling Green, MO; Brie- Anne Koenig of Quincy; Chandra Rae Johnson of Tulsa, OK; Joshua Johnson of Tulsa, OK; Jesse, Nicole and Sara Pattison, Brittany and Kristen Barnes, all of Quincy; 2 great grandchildren, Teagan Grace Mitchell of Quincy, and Floyd Preston Y-Lee Johnson of Tulsa, OK; 6 step grandchildren, 6 step great grandchildren; 2 sisters, Virginia Robertson and her husband Claude, Texarkana, AR, and Shirley DeSchinkel, Moline, IL, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, and one granddaughter, Zoe Faith Alexander.

Services will be Monday, August 29, 2005, at 11:00 am in Hansen-Spear Funeral Home with the Rev. Joseph Evers officiating. Burial will be in Greenmount Cemetery with military rites conducted by the American Legion Post #37. Visitation will be Sunday evening from 4-7 pm at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Blessing Cancer Center or Transitions of Western Illinois.
