Virgil C. "Dick" Vogel, age 80 of 1246 Curtis Creek died Monday, September 26, 2005 at 5:23 am in Bickford Cottage at 4221 Maine.
He was born May 17, 1925 in Melrose Township, Illinois the son of Frank and Julia Herold Vogel. On March 19, 1947 he married Betty Jane Finchum in Fort Madison, IA. She preceded him in death on February 12, 1996.
Mr. Vogel was a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church. He served in the Navy in World War II in the Pacific Theatre. Mr. Vogel was a semi tractor trailer driver. He drove for McNay Trucking for over 10 years until he retired in 1990. Prior to that he drove for Pepsi, Coke and Dr. Pepper. He loved to fly, having learned after World War II. Every morning he enjoyed visiting with his friends at Hardees on Broadway.
Survivors include a daughter, Michele Merkel and her husband James of Lake St. Louis, MO; a son, Rick Vogel and his wife Maria of Keller,Texas, 4 grandchildren Zach and Casey Vogel of Keller, TX, and Jimmy and Kayla Merkel of Lake St. Louis, MO, 2 brothers Raymond Vogel and his wife Jenny of Silvis, IL, James Vogel and his wife Lou of Quincy, a sister, Loretta Garnett of Denver, CO, and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by 2 brothers Frank and Herb Vogel and a sister Cecelia Simonson.
Funeral services will be Thursday morning at 9:30 a.m. in the Hansen-Spear and at 10 a.m. in St. Peter's Catholic Church with the Rev. Dan Bergbower officiating. Burial will be in Greenmount Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Hansen-Spear Funeral Home with a wake service at 5 p.m. Memorials may be made to Blessing Foundation for Hospice. American Legion Post #37 will conduct full military rites at the cemetery.
