Virden LeRoy Winship, age 87, of 504 Montgomery Apt. B, Canton, MO died Friday, November 17, 2006 at 4:35 p.m. in Lewis County Nursing Home.
He was born May 5, 1919 in Venita, Oklahoma the son of John and Dollie Vance Winship. He married Lucille Shumate on December 2, 1939. She preceded him in death on April 11, 1997. On November 14, 1998 he married Frances Edwards. She survives.
He was a 1937 graduate of Lewistown High School. He was a farmer and building contractor. For 63 years he served on the board of the Lewis County Mutual Insurance Company, and was president for many years. He was an active deacon in the Dover Baptist Church, and later the First Baptist Church of Canton, MO.
Survivors also include a son, Dennis Winship and four grandchildren, Erick, Krista, Scott and Beth Ann, all of LaGrange, MO and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister Elizabeth Shumate.
Services will be Tuesday, November 21, 2006, at 1:30 pm in First Baptist Church of Canton with Pastor Jim Reynolds officiating. Visitation will be Monday, November 20 from 6-8 pm at the Hansen-Spear Funeral Home.
Burial will be in Dover Baptist Cemetery. Memorials made to the Building Fund at First Baptist Church in Canton in his name would be appreciated. Hansen-Spear Funeral Directors are in charge of arrangements.
