Iva Lee Sebastian

Iva Lee Sebastian, age 88, of 2247 Spring, died Monday, January 22, 2007 at 7:12 p.m. in Blessing Hospital.

She was born February 1, 1918 in Lancaster, Missouri the daughter of Henry and Della May Puttoff Burns. On September 21, 1972 she married John C. Sebastian in Las Vegas, Nevada. He preceded her in death on March 7, 1989.

Iva Lee attended Culver Stockton College in Canton, Missouri for one year. She then entered Frances Weinberg School of Beauty Culture in Quincy, graduating with the highest honors and winning two first place trophies in designer hair style competition. She took advanced training in Chicago under a silver trophy hair stylist in hair cutting and tinting. She had 25 years experience and worked at the Rouge Box in the Illinois State Bank Building, then at Halbach Schroeder Department Store, and later opening her own salon - Iva Lee's Beauty Salon. John Sebastian's commercial construction position took them to many states in the U.S. (Illinois, Missouri, Virginia, Florida, Nevada, California, Idaho, Washington, Georgia, Alaska, and Hawaii).

Iva Lee was a volunteer worker in many organizations in every city where she lived. She volunteered at St. Mary's Hospital and Blessing Hospital in Quincy for many years. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Order of the Eastern Star, Alpha Chapter #109, White Shrine of Jerusalem, Mariam Shrine #3, Spring Lake Country Club, Blessing Hospital Board, Quincy Business Women's Club, Elks Lodge and Auxiliary, Quincy Newcomers Club, and Moose Lodge.

Survivors include a step-daughter, Barbara Kobler of Green Valley, AZ; a step-son, Vince Sebastian of Osteen, FL; three nieces: Joyce Ann Wenneker-Curtis of Glendale, WI; Barbara Louise Byars of Quincy; and Betty Jewel Terwelp of Naples, FL; a nephew, George H. Anderson of Kimberling City, MO; and many cousins. In addition to her husband she was preceded in death by her parents; four sisters: Emma Burns, Eva Burns-Baker, Edna Burns-Anderson, and Lucille Burns; two brothers, Birney J. and William C. Burns; and two nephews, Birney Burns, Jr. and Buddy J. Burns.

Services will be on Friday, January 26, 2007 at 11:00 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Rod Bakker and the Rev. George Tomko officiating. Visitation will be on Thursday from 4-7 p.m. with an Order of Eastern Star service at Hansen-Spear Funeral Home. Inurnment will take place at Mountain View Cemetery in Pasadena, CA at a later date. Memorials made to Blessing Foundation or First Presbyterian Church in her name would be appreciated.
