Harold L. Madsen, age 87 formerly of 2905 Lincoln Hill SW, died Tuesday, January 22, 2008 at 9:10 a.m. in Blessing Hospital.
He was born October 6, 1920 in Tremont, Illinois the son of Rudolph M. and Mabel Agnes Heatherton Madsen. On December 8, 1945 he married Mary Patricia Burrows in Northampton, England. She preceded him in death on June 10, 2000.
Harold graduated from the University of Illinois, Champaign, IL. He proudly served in the U.S. Army during WWII as a 1st lieutenant in the 397th AAA infantry. After the war Harold graduated from the University of Illinois School of Law. Later, he moved to Springfield where he served on the Commerce Commission during the tenure of Adelai Stevenson. In the early 1950's began his career as an attorney working as an Associate at Schmiedeskamp and Deege Law Offices. Eventually, Harold purchased the private practice of Paul Weisenhorn. During that period he also served as a public defender for Adams County and was Master of Chancery. In 1977, he was appointed Associate Judge in the 8th Judicial Circuit Court, where he served until his retirement in 1984. After retirement he returned to private practice with his son, Robert, in Quincy.
Harold was a member of the Adams County Bar association, Elks Club, was assistant Cub Master at Madison School, served on numerous Boards, and was an active member of St. John's Episcopal Church. He enjoyed listening to classical music, fly fishing, boating and gardening.
Survivors include: 2 sons, Robert L. Madsen and his wife Teresa of Quincy; and John W. Madsen and his wife Janet of Jefferson, MD; 2 daughters, Jean E. Madsen and her husband George Perkins of Littleton, CO; and Elizabeth C. Madsen and her husband Michael of Portland, OR; 12 grandchildren, Michael Madsen and his wife Laura, of Quincy; James Madsen, of Austin, TX; Shannon Robson and her husband Clint, of St. Louis, MO; Curtis Frericks, of Chicago, IL; Nicholas and Kirsten Frericks, both of Quincy; Noah and Aaron Latz, both of Portland, OR; Patrick Madsen, of Jefferson, MD; Clara Ann Patrice Perkins of Littleton, CO.; 2 great-grandchildren, Alexander and Miranda Madsen, both of Quincy; a brother, Paul B. Madsen and his wife Emmadean, of Mahomet, IL; a sister, Ruth Kuder and her husband Homer, of St. Joseph, IL; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife he was preceded in death by his parents and a brother Marion Madsen.
FUNERAL SERVICES: 10:00 a.m. Saturday, January 26, in St. John's Episcopal Church. Burial will be in Quincy Memorial Park.
VISITATION: 5 - 7 p.m. Friday at the Hansen Spear Funeral Home.
