Wayne Powers

Wayne A. Powers, age 80, of 3322 N 12th, died peacefully in his home on Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 8:45 a.m.

He was born January 13, 1928 in Quincy, Illinois the son of Harold W. and Margaret Rogers Powers. On October 29, 1949, he married Shirley Pfirman in the St. Boniface Rectory, Quincy, Illinois. She survives.
Wayne was a graduate of Notre Dame High School where he played on the basketball and football teams. In 1998 he was inducted into the QND Hall of Fame as part of the 1944 football team. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1946-1948. He worked for Quincy Awning and Tent before starting Powers Awning Company with his brother, Harold, Jr. Wayne's special interest was swimming. He was a swimming and diving champion in his youth and was a life guard as a teenager at Indian Mounds Pool. He was also active in the swim programs and served as the swim team coach at the old Y.M.C.A. on 4th and Jersey. When the new Y.M.C.A. was built, he became the Aquatic Director. His idea was to have every 3rd grader in Quincy learn to swim, and he made that happen in the 70's. Later he became an Associate Executive Director. In 1961 he revived the 10 mile river swim from LaGrange, MO to Quincy. Wayne was also employed by Black and Company Hardware. He was a member of St. Francis Solanus Catholic Church.

Wayne was proud of his Irish heritage and enjoyed traveling to Ireland and researching the family genealogy. After his retirement, he began woodcarving, and Santas were his favorite. He loved spending time with his family.

Survivors also include his son, Michael Powers and wife Nancy of St. Charles, MO and their family: Wayne's grandchild, Jennifer Wallin and husband Mike, and the great grandchildren Nathan and Sydney, all of Forest Lake, MN, grandchild, Angela Melo and husband Ricardo and a great grandchild, Colm of Troy, IL, step grandchild Amber Groharing, and step great grandchildren Allison and Madison Stanfill of Warrenton, MO; a daughter, Penny Terstriep and husband Matthew of Overland Park, KS and their family: Wayne's grandchildren, Chad Terstriep and wife Shelby, and great grandchildren, Elise, Drew and a new arrival in December of Fargo, ND, Scott Terstriep and wife Staci of Shawnee, KS, Kyle and Kara Terstriep of Overland Park, KS; his son Theodore Powers and wife Darka of Chicago and Wayne's grandchild Jacqueline; a sister, Sister Mary Hiltrudis Powers of O'Fallon, MO; a brother, Dr. Francis Powers and wife Jean of Quincy; three sisters-in-law, Joanne Powers of Glenview, IL, Arlene Powers, and Marsha Plawer, both of Quincy, and a brother-in-law, Mike Herrington and wife Vickie of Denver, CO, and eight nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Howard and Harold Powers.

Services: 9:30 am prayers Saturday, July 26th at Hansen-Spear followed by a funeral mass at 10:00 am in St. Francis Solanus Catholic Church with Father Tom Shaughnessy officiating. Inurnment will be in Calvary Cemetery.

Visitation: 4-7 pm Friday at Hansen-Spear with a Wake Service at 6:30 p.m.
