Betty 'Lou' Voorhees

Betty "Lou" Voorhees, of Heartland Health Care Center, Sarasota, FL, formerly of Quincy died Saturday, August 2, 2008 at 10:00 pm in Heartland Care Center.

She was born May 28, 1928 in New Castle, Indiana the daughter of Robert and Naomi Cook Luellen. On June 11, 1950 she married William Allen Voorhees in Lafayette, Indiana, the former president of Electric Wheel Company. He preceded her in death on August 18, 1988.

Lou was a 1946 graduate and Valedictorian of New Castle High School and was awarded a full scholarship in Engineering to Purdue University. She graduated with honors from the Purdue Liberal Science Program. She was First Runner-up Purdue University Home Coming Queen and was a member and officer of Pi Beta Phi Sorority.

She was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church where she was a member of the St. John's Guild, Altar Guild and choir. Lou was a member of Quincy Service League, Quincy Art Center Board, Quincy Symphony Board and the Purple Heart. She was a member and officer of Friends in Council, enjoyed reading and presenting on many subjects at the Council. She enjoyed music and played the piano. Lou was a member of the Quincy Country Club where she was active in golf, tennis, bowling and bridge. Her main activity and source of enjoyment throughout her life was her family.

Lou was beloved by all in the Quincy community, and was known as the kind woman with the "cherub" face.

Survivors include her children and their families, Michael Luellen Voorhees and his wife Nadia of Broomall, PA, Marguerite Voorhees Hernandez-Ron and her husband Ramon of Wellington, New Zealand, Elizabeth Voorhees Parks and her husband Michael of Quincy, and Kathryn Luellen Voorhees of Louisville, KY; 7 grandchildren, Andrew Parks and Samuel Parks of Quincy, Benjamin Allen Voorhees, USMC, Sarasota, FL, Aidan Christopher Voorhees and Sofia Maria Voorhees of Broomall, PA, and Marguerite Elizabeth Voorhees Perryman and William Lawrence Voorhees Perryman of Louisville, Kentucky.

She was also preceded in death by her parents and a brother Robert Luellen.

Services: 1 PM Friday August 15, 2008 at Saint John's Episcopal Church, with Father James Derbyshire officiating. Burial will be in Greenmount Cemetery.

Visitation: 4-7 PM Thursday August 14, 2008 at Hansen-Spear Funeral Home.

Memorials: Cure Alzheimer's Fund or Tidewell Hospice in Sarasota, FL.
