Edith T. Harter, age 95, of Sunset Home, formerly of Hotel Quincy and Ridgebrook Apts. died Friday, October 10, 2008 at 3:30 p.m. in Sunset Home.

She was born December 18, 1912 in Quincy, Illinois, the daughter of Emil and Frances Hoeing Prost. On August 12, 1939, she married A. B. "Ace" Harter in St. John's Catholic Church. He preceded her in death on August 28, 1995.

She was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church and was active in Parish and school functions, notably co-chairing the September Card Party for fifty years. She was also a member of the St. Elizabeth Society and a volunteer at St. Mary Hospital. She and her husband were avid Blue Devil Basketball fans. For twelve of the twenty-seven years her husband Ace was manager of Hotel Quincy, she assumed the duties of Housekeeper.

Edith will be lovingly remembered by her immediate and extended family, friends, neighbors and caregivers. Every morning, she would be dressed and ready to go out in case anyone called. She loved to shop, go to lunch, or visit with family and friends who would often travel great distances to spend time with her. She loved baking for everyone and was renowned for her delicious pies. It was difficult to pick a favorite or to guess how many she had made in her full lifetime.

Survivors include two daughters, Judy Kent and her husband Laurence, and Linda Carper and her husband David, all of Quincy; four grandsons, James Humphrey and his wife Linda, Blue Grass, IA; Jeffrey Humphrey and his wife Cindy, Greenwood, IN; Jon Humphrey and his wife Rose, Galva, IL; and Barret Carper, Jacksonville, IL; a granddaughter Alison Schatz and her husband Jesse, McHenry, IL; a step granddaughter Laura Kent Donahue, Quincy; two stepgrandsons Roger Kent and his wife Jane, Orion, IL and Curtis Kent and his wife Sally, Stillwater, OK, and their families; nine great grandchildren Jennifer Harris and her husband, Jonathon; Jay, Jeffrey, Jessika, Jacob, Jesse and Jonelle Humphrey and Audrey and Jacqueline Schatz and a new baby due on Ocotber 13, 2008; three step great grandchildren Tara, Jacy and Aaron Goldsby and his wife, Anna, and several nieces and nephews and numerous great nieces and nephews.

She was also preceded in death by her parents, a grandson Jay Humphrey, a granddaughter Theresa Lynn Humphrey, seven brothers Albert, Herman, William, Frank and Walter Prost and two named Joseph in infancy, and seven sisters Josephine Liesen, Frances Clark, Marie Zink, Emilia Broemmer and three in infancy named Amanda, Bertha and Pauline.

Services: 9:30 am Thursday - prayers at Hansen-Spear followed by a Funeral Mass at 10:00 am in Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church with Father John Carberry officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.

Visitation: 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Hansen-Spear Funeral Home with a Wake Service at 5:30 pm.
