Edward W. Horst, age 93, of 2130 Harrison, died Friday, March 20, 2009 at 3:05 p.m. in Good Samaritan Home.
He was born May 6, 1915 in Quincy, Illinois the son of Edward L. and Mabel R. Zimmerman Horst. On September 9, 1946 he married Lois V. Whiting in Virginia, MN. She preceded him in death on September 27, 1971.
Mr. Horst was a 1933 graduate of Quincy High School and graduated from Gem City Business College. He was employed by International Harvester until he joined the Navy during World War II where he was stationed in Washington, DC. He returned to International Harvester, and then worked at Selby Implement Company as office manager for over 50 years until his retirement.
Mr. Horst was baptized on May 28, 1915. He was raised in St. Paul's Evangelical Church, which later became Trinity United Church of Christ where he was an active member for most of his life. He was a Sunday School teacher, elder, and held other positions as well as being Sunday School treasurer for 55 years. He was a lifetime member of the Noon Optimist Club where he held various offices, was the newsletter editor for many years, and served as the Lieutenant Governor of the Central-Southern Illinois District.
Survivors include three children, Diane Butikofer and husband Gregg, Quincy, Edward William 'Bill' Horst and wife Channah, Louisville, CO, and Robert W. 'Bob' Horst and wife Julie, San Jose, CA; six grandchildren, Lori Biswell and husband Matt, Quincy, Gina Garippo and husband Paul, Glen Ellyn, IL, Eliora and Noah Horst, Louisville, CO, Lisa Horst, New Haven, CT, and Kevin Horst, Chicago, IL; and four great grandchildren, Abby and Blake Biswell, of Quincy, and Brandt and Bennett Garippo, of Glen Ellyn.
In addition to his wife, Lois, he was preceded in death by his brother Grant, a granddaughter Eliana Horst, and a great granddaughter, Emily Biswell.
Services: Tuesday, March 24, 2009, at 1:30 pm in Good Samaritan Home Chapel with Chaplain Steve Disseler and the Rev. Dean Bauch officiating. Burial will be in Greenmount Cemetery.
Visitation: Monday, March 23 from 4 to 6 pm at Hansen-Spear Funeral Home.
