Evelyn Schwartz

Evelyn Emma Schwartz, recently of Sunset Home, died Friday, May 1, 2009 in Blessing Hospital.

She was born April 25, 1921 in Quincy, a daughter of Thomas and Elsie M. Lepper Loos. She was a 1939 graduate of Quincy High School and attended Quincy College. She taught rural schools for a while and, while boarding in a country home, met J. Eugene Schwartz whom she married on August 19, 1944. He died January 19, 1996.

Evelyn and Gene moved to a farm near Big Neck where they lived for 42 years. They were foster parents for DCFS and made a temporary home for 18 children. Upon Gene's retirement from farming, they moved to Golden. They were members of Holy Cross Lutheran Church.

Evelyn was a 19 year member of RSVP, volunteering at North Adams Home, Golden Good Shepherd Home, Cheerful Home and Sunset Home.

On the death of her husband, Evelyn returned to Quincy and renewed her membership in St. James Lutheran Church, where she had been baptized, confirmed, and married.

She is survived by a son, Stan (Kathy) Schwartz, of Quincy; two daughters, Amy (Anthony) Glass of Washington, IL; Deborah Hickman of Melbourne, Florida; 8 grandchildren: Sarah (Mark) Erickson of Jefferson, IA, Neal Post of Kewanee, Leanne (Pat) McDermott of Aledo, Todd (Dayna) Schwartz of Salt Lake City, UT, Megan (Vinicio) Zuquino of Guatemala City, Guatemala, Brad Schwartz of Chicago, Jason Hickman of Florida, and Joan (T.J.) Holland of Florida. She had nine great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, a daughter, Jeanine Post; a son-in-law, Clifford Post; a grandson, Andrew Post, in childbirth; a sister, Sybil Loos; a brother, Allen Loos; and numerous brothers- and sisters-in-law.

The family will greet friends at a visitation from 9:30 - 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 9 at St. James Lutheran Church in Quincy. A Memorial Service will follow at 11:00.

Memorials may be made to St. James Lutheran Church or Sunset Home.
