Jean Kathleen Sorenson, age 87 of 2516 Southbrook Rd., died Monday, June 29, 2009 at 10 p.m. in Blessing Hospital.
She was born December 6, 1921 in Estevan, Saskatchewan, Canada the daughter of Walter T. and Kathleen Dyer Moore. On June 9, 1948 she married Andrew Donald Sorenson, Sr. in Estevan, Saskatchewan, Canada. He preceded her in death on November 26, 1985.
She was a graduate of Estevan High School. She received her Bachelor's Degree from the University of Manitoba, Winnipeg, where she was a member of the Tri Delta Sorority. She had a Master's Degree in Child Development from Iowa State University, Ames, IA.
She came to Quincy in 1946 as the director of Cheerful Home. In 1957 she began teaching kindergarten in Quincy Public Schools, retiring in 1986. She had taught at Madison, Highland-Riverside, Ellington and Monroe Schools. She was a member of Vermont Street United Methodist Church, the Women's City Club and the Illinois Retired Teachers Association where she was on the Executive Council. She was a founding board member of Family Service Agency (now Cornerstone) and a founding board member of Adams County Mental Health Association (now Transitions). She was a volunteer for the American Heart Association.
Survivors include; 4 children, Dr. Ann Kathleen Behrens and Marian J. Sorenson both of Quincy, Dr. A. Donald Sorenson and his wife Carol of Olympia, WA, and Dr. W. Allin Sorenson and his wife Ruth of Springfield, MO; 7 grandchildren, Paul Matthew Behrens and his wife Christie of Hannibal, MO, Kristin Kathleen Johnson and her husband Bryan of Sacramento, CA, Peter Andrew Behrens and his wife Ellie of Red Wing, MN, Andrew David and John Daniel Sorenson of Olympia, WA, and Deanna Rochelle and Lora Noel Sorenson of Springfield, MO; 3 great grandchildren, Macy Noelle Behrens of Hannibal, MO, Grayson Bryan Johnson and Landon Robert Johnson both of Sacramento, CA; and nieces and nephews in Canada and the United States. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, sister Grace Newfeld, brother Dr. Allin Moore, and a granddaughter Sarah Ann Sorenson.
Services: Friday, July 3, 2009, at 10 a.m. in Vermont Street United Methodist Church with the Rev. Kevin McGinnis and Rev. Scott Grulke officiating, with burial in Greenmount Cemetery.
Visitation: Thursday, July 2, 2009 from 4-7 p.m.
Memorials: Vermont Street United Methodist Church.
