Rondal Gene Higgins, age 76, of 1440 N 10th Street, formerly of 1629 Payson Avenue, died on Saturday, September 20, 2014 at 8:14 pm in St. Vincent's Home.
Rondal was born October 21, 1937 in Quincy, Illinois, the son of Glen William and Lucille Alnora Carter Higgins. He married Constance Patricia Saylor on August 22, 1958 at Union United Methodist Church in Quincy. She survives.
Rondal was a 1956 graduate of Quincy High School. He enlisted in the United States Army after high school and served eight years in the Army Reserve, he was honorably discharged as a Platoon Sergeant. He was employed a year at Slater Plumbing and Heating before spending 34 years at the Quincy Paper Box Company. Rondal then worked for Prairie Farms Dairy for nine years before becoming the custodian at St. James Evangelical Lutheran Church and School.
Rondal was a member of the South Side Boat Club, the Camper Stampers Camping Club, and the Square Dancing Silver Dollars. He was a member of St. James Lutheran Church and had served as an Elder. He enjoyed wood crafts, fishing, camping and bowling. He was a handyman for his family, friends and neighbors.
Survivors in addition to his wife include four children, Victoria J. (Kent) McClain of Quincy, Thomas L. (Lee Woodfin) Higgins of Lusby, MD, Tammy S. (Terry) Phillips of Corona, CA, and G. Curtis (Renee) Higgins of Quincy; eight grandchild, Christopher (Lani) Phillips of Las Vegas, NV, Carrie Phillips, Sarah (Brandon) Meehan, and Betsy (Kevin) Terwelp, all of Quincy, Michael and Brandon Phillips, both of Corona, CA, and Grant and Gavin Higgins, both of Quincy; 13 great-grandchildren, Christopher Jr., Halia, Shawn, Ryan and Matthew Phillips, all of Las Vegas, NV, Monique Phillips of Palmyra, MO, Maria Phillips, Micheal Sutton, Collin and Reese Meehan, and Hannah, Hailey and Hunter Terwelp, all of Quincy; and a brother, Larry Dean Higgins of Quincy.
Rondal was preceded in death by his parents.
Services: 11:00 am on Thursday (September 25, 2014) in St. James Evangelical Lutheran Church with Rev. Marlin Rempfer officiating.
Inurnment: Greenmount Cemetery, Quincy, Illinois
Visitation: 10:00 to 11:00 am on Thursday (September 25, 2014) at St. James Evangelical Lutheran Church.
