Deloris Scranton

Deloris Elaine VanOrder Scranton, age 81, of 1220 State St., Quincy, died Sunday, September 28, 2014, at 3:20 pm in her home.

Deloris was born May 16, 1933 in St. Mary's Hospital in Quincy, Illinois, the daughter of Roy Clifton and Eva Gallaher VanOrder. She married John William Scranton on September 21, 1951 in Hull, IL. He survives.

Deloris was a 1951 graduate of Kinderhook High School. She also graduated from Quincy College with a Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education. Deloris loved children and she loved teaching them. She taught elementary school for years in both public and parochial schools in various states including: Kentucky, Georgia, Louisiana, Virginia, Missouri, and Illinois. She also tutored privately and taught Sunday school. In her spare time, Deloris enjoyed gardening and cooking. Anyone who came to her house had to sit down for a meal, whether they wanted to eat or not.

In addition to her husband, survivors include: three children: Richard (Kathy) Scranton of Phoenix, AZ; David (Mary Jo) Scranton of Quincy; and Carol (Peter) Badami of Quincy; three grandchildren: Michael (Lydia) Scranton of Manor, TX; Joshua (Kristie) Scranton of Quincy; and Brent Rodhouse of Quincy; two great grandchildren: Ethan and Aaron Scranton; a brother, Michael Jan (Mardell) Murphy of Kinderhook, IL; and several nieces and nephews.

Deloris was preceded in death by her parents; her step father, Lowell Murphy; and a brother, Richard Leroy VanOrder.

Services: 11:00 a.m. on Friday, October 3, 2014, at Grand View Burial Park in Hannibal, MO, with Rev. Brian Meado officiating.

Burial: Grand View Burial Park in Hannibal, MO

Visitation: Thursday, October 2, 2014 from 4-7 p.m. at Hansen-Spear Funeral Home.

Memorials: in lieu of flowers, Reading Recovery at Washington School
