Ms. Edla Balzer Hummel (née Aden) passed away peacefully at St. Vincent's Home in Quincy, IL on May 23, 2015 at 6:30 a.m. She was 96 years old.
Edla was born on 22 Jun 1918 in Raymond, MN to Ralph B. and Sophia (née Goudschaal) Aden. She married Loren E. Balzer in 1935. They divorced in 1963. She then married Howard Hummel in 1973, but divorced soon after. She worked as a waitress, bookkeeper, and also owned her own business at one time called Eddie's Flavor Freeze in Camp Point, IL.
Edla loved to quilt and grow flowers, especially African violets. She taught Sunday School for 22 years at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Clayton, IL and had been a member of St. James Lutheran Church in Quincy, IL for many years.
Edla is survived by four children: Loren G. Balzer of Camp Point, IL, Larry D. Balzer and wife Elizabeth of Camp Point, IL, Mrs. Bob (Marilyn) Neff of Canton, MO, and Sharon Oenning of Mobile, AL; 18 grandchildren: Debbie Warner, Katie Rushing, Cindy Haffa, James, Charles, and Ruthann Balzer, Danny Balzer, and Jerrod Balzer, Randy and David Fugate, Steve Balzer, Lisa Shouse, Robert Balzer, Jo-Ellen Smith, Ron Neff, Sheryl Anderson, Michael Oenning, and Katherine Miles; 49 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. A sister, Mrs. Donald (Gertrude) Balzer and a brother Roland Aden, both of Quincy, IL, survive her.
She was preceded in death by two children: Gerald Balzer of Canton, MO and Mrs. Roger (Jo-Anne) Fugate of Wauchula, FL.; her parents Ralph and Sophie (née Goudschaal) Aden; two brothers, John and Carl Aden, and two sisters: Anne Renken and Esther Trefz, all of Camp Point, IL and two great-granddaughters Renee and Regina Haffa.
