John V. "Jack" Barnes Jr., age 71, of 6237 Ewbanks Rd., Quincy, died Wednesday, July 6, 2016, at 5:25 pm in Blessing Hospital.

John was born May 13, 1945 in Chicago, Illinois, the son of John V., Sr. and Ruth Helen Penrose Barnes. He married Jean Whited on November 27, 1969 in Mt. Sterling, Illinois. She survives.

John was a 1963 graduate of Quincy High School. He then served in the United States Air Force from 1965 to 1969. John was employed as a technician for Illinois Bell and its subsequent companies for 32 years until his retirement in 2002. John was an active member at PASA Park for over 30 years. He was interested in rabbit breeding and served as the superintendent of rabbit breeders at the Adams County Fair. John was a member of Vermont Street United Methodist Church.

In addition to his wife, John is survived by four children: Cindy (Tim) Harris of Chicago, IL; Brian (Cinda) Barnes of Quincy; Melanie Barnes of Springfield, IL; and Justin (Samantha) Barnes of Quincy; seven grandchildren: Olivia Harris; Brianna, Abigail, Katelin, and Ethan Barnes; and Ava and Alexis Barnes; a sister, Evanna (Mike) Hilfrink of Bloomington, IL; a niece, Jennifer (Kevin) Lambert of Bloomington, IL; a nephew, Jason Hilfrink of Fresno, CA; and several cousins.

John was preceded in death by his parents; his step-father, Earl Callahan; and his parents-in-law, Chuck and Eunice Whited.

Services: 11:00 am Saturday, July 9, 2016 at Hansen-Spear Funeral Home, with Rev. Patty Johansen officiating.

Burial: Greenmount Cemetery, Quincy, Illinois

Visitation: 9:00 am - 11:00 am, Saturday July 9, 2016 at Hansen-Spear Funeral Home
