John was born February 19, 1933 in St. Louis, MO to Daniel A. McCarthy Sr. and Edith Cahill McCarthy. He was the third of five sons including: Dan, Jerry, Tom, and Michael, all of whom were 2nd Lieutenants in the United States Army.
After graduating from Christian Brothers College High School in St. Louis, John graduated from the University of Missouri-Columbia, where he met his wife Mary Best. While at Mizzou, he was a member of the ROTC and Delta Tau Delta fraternity. He later served on the fraternity's house board for several years.
In 1954 John married Mary Best. He then entered the Army as an officer and was stationed in Korea for two years and four months. He then came to Quincy and began working at E. Best Plumbing and Heating Supply in Quincy, IL, where he spent the next 64 years serving as salesman, president and senior consultant.
John served on the Board of Directors of John Wood Community College for 17 years. He was Commodore of Quincy Yacht Club. He was on the Board of Directors of Quincy Country Club and Gem City Savings and Loan. He was a former member of Ducks Unlimited, Knights of Columbus, and the Quincy Boat Club.
John loved boating, golfing, duck hunting, traveling, enjoying fine food, and entertaining his friends and family. As the years wore on, he liked to think of himself as a conservationist and loved to ride his tractor around his property planting trees - lots of trees!
