When her initial interest in Dietary studies waned, she decided on teaching and re-entered Kearney State Teacher's College. While at Percival, she fell in love and became engaged to Donald Fulton. After dealing with the Missouri River flood of 1952, her teaching career moved to Tabor, Iowa and Verla and Donald Ray Fulton were united in marriage on March 27, 1953 at the Trinity Baptist Church in Omaha, Nebraska. They were blessed with three sons, Randy Lee, Park Lawton, and Max Allen.

In 1958, Verla and Don moved to a farm south of Carson, Iowa where Don farmed for 39 years. During those years, Verla substitute taught in the Carson-Macedonia School District, helped on the farm, and became involved with church and civic activities. Keeping up with the boys' activities was a major endeavor.

Verla was a member of the Carson United Methodist Church, the Women's Auxiliary, and Eastern Star. She enjoyed spending time helping with the various women's groups and taught Sunday school for several years. Verla and Don took on a retirement lifestyle in 1997. They continued to live on the farm, kept up with the boys' families, traveling and sightseeing the Midwest, and taking one to two bus tours about the US annually. Don passed in 2009 and Verla entered the Oakland Heights assisted living facility where she kept socially active with friends and assisting activities at Oakland Manor and Heights.
