Mary Marjorie Smith
December 22, 1920 - March 26, 2019

A funeral service Mary will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, April 5, 2019, at the First United Methodist Church, Algona. Visitation will be held 1 hour prior. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery, Algona.

Mary Marjorie Smith was born December 22, 1920, in rural West Bend, the daughter of William and Effie (Greenfield) Runchey. Mary attended Country School and graduated from Algona High School in 1938. Following high school she helped her parents on the farm until she was united in marriage to Wayne Smith on July 1, 1939. Wayne and Mary farmed together near West Bend till Wayne's death on July 16, 1976. Mary then moved to Algona in 1978.

Mary enjoyed playing cards, crocheting, knitting, making quilts, and traveling. She traveled to Nova Scotia, Germany, Switzerland, the Holy Land, and Australia. She also enjoyed spending time with her family and helping others. She was a member of the United Methodist Church for 86 years, United Methodist Women, Daughters of the American Revolution, Cresco Mother and Daughter's Club, and Homemakers Club. She was also very involved with 4-H being the leader for 16 years.

Mary died Tuesday, March 26, 2019 at the Good Samaritan Society of Algona. She was 98.

Mary is survived by her children, Paul and June Smith of Algona and Susan and Bruce Strampe of Panama City, FL; son-in-law, Kenneth Baughman of Redlands, CA; grandchildren, Marguerite (David) Wilson, Tonya (Chris) Bowman, Shane (Kim) Smith, Amy (Donald) Stoddard, and David (Wendy) Strampe; 12 great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Wayne; daughter, Ann Baughman; parents, William and Effie Runchey, and two brothers Fernley and Lyle Runchey.

When mom didn't drive Mary would take her and those two were friends for ever. Hopefully she did not suffer when she passed. My mom passed in 2010. Our sympathy Cheri and Tom Boeckholt Miller"
