September 6, 1935 - April 15, 2019

Floyd George Bierman, 83, from Dumont passed on Monday, April 15, 2019, at the Rehabilitation Center of Hampton in Hampton, IA.

Floyd was born on September 6, 1935 at his home north of Austinville, to George and Dena (Harms) Bierman. He attended school in Austinville through 8th grade at which time he helped on the farm north of Austinville, IA. Floyd enlisted in the Army from 1955 to 1957 with his basic training at Camp Chaffee near Little Rock, Arkansas, as well as serving at Fort Sam Houston, San Antonio, TX, and Henry Kaserne, Munich, Germany. Floyd served as a medic in the Medical Detachment attached to 11th Airborne with a Rank of SP3 at discharge, receiving the honor of Marksman (Rifle M-1) and Good Conduct Medal. Upon his return from overseas Floyd, married the love of his life, Bena (Schipper) Bierman on May 17, 1957, at Washington Reformed Church in rural Ackley. To this union six children were born. Floyd was a devoted husband, father, and hard worker. For a short time after the army Floyd worked for the Austinville Egg Place, two years for Ken Reinke, and one year for Ralph Wessels before starting his own farming operation East of Kesley in 1960. He also sold McNess Sales products, Pride Seed corn, and NaChurs Fertilizer throughout his farming career. He retired from farming in 1994 on their farm north of Kesley. After retiring from farming, Floyd was affectionately known as "THE IRONMAN" for 10 years cleaning up scrap metal on many farms and acreages. In 2006 Floyd & Bena moved from the farm to the town of Dumont to enjoy their retirement years. Floyd was a 60 year long time member of the Kesley Presbyterian Church in Kesley, IA, where he served as Trustee, Elder, and Deacon. He was a member of numerous organizations such as Presbyterian Mariners group, on the bowling league, and Dumont American Legion. He enjoyed bowling, Casino trips, playing cards (500, Phase 10, and Skip Bo) as well as attending sporting events and concerts occasionally for his 17 grandchildren. He was an avid Wood Worker and over the last 12 years he proudly made many items for his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, siblings and sibling in-laws, as well as neighbors, friends, and church congregation members. Amongst his many craft projects, Floyd also created a pickup or van complete with the name on the vehicle for all the businesses in Dumont, and a few in Hampton, and Iowa Falls. He created a firetruck for seven local fire stations including Dumont and surrounding small towns. He was honored to have 12 of his family members volunteering with the fire department in these small local towns. One of his greatest achievements was an arbor and swing he made in front of their house in memory of his wife, Bena.
