Lois Ann Ruhl of Manchester, N.J., passed away on May 23, 2019 at age 83 following a long and heartbreaking battle with Alzheimer's Disease.
She was born September 6, 1935 in Ridgewood, Queens, N.Y., the daughter of Robert and Anna Schott. Lois married Richard (Dick) H. Ruhl on October 6, 1957.
She began her career as a stenographer at Shell Chemical Co. and was transferred to Shell Oil Co. as the private secretary to one of the main buyers. She retired to start her family and became a stay-at-home mom for her two children, Glenn and Kim, in the family's new home in Massapequa, Long Island, N.Y. An avid reader, she later returned to the workforce part-time at the Massapequa Public Library, eventually working her way up to head of the circulation desk.
Lois was loved by all who knew her, and was especially devoted to her family. As her children grew older, she expanded that dedication to her grandchildren, Dylan and Dawson, and enjoyed yearly month-long visits to their Midwestern home until her disease made it too difficult to travel. She loved the outdoors - her happy place was the ocean, and she spent many hours strolling various Long Island and New Jersey beaches with her family throughout the years.
Survivors include her devoted husband, Dick Ruhl of Manchester; children, Glenn Ruhl (Lea DiPentima) of New Fairfield, CT, and Kim (Dave) Dearth of Mauston, WI; grandchildren, Dylan and Dawson Dearth: brother-in-law and sister-in-law Erich and Hilda Ruhl; nieces Susan (Bruce) Shafer and Wendy (Jay) Murray, great-niece Stephanie Russo, great--nephew Nicholas Russo, and many friends and relatives.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Anna, and her sister Bernice, and father-in-law and mother-in-law Erich and Sophie Ruhl.
Visitation will be Thursday, May 30 from 2-4 and 6-8pm. At Horizon Funeral and Cremation Services, 1329 Route 37 West, Toms River. Funeral service will be Friday, May 31 at 10:00am, with interment to follow at Pinelawn Memorial Park, Farmingdale, Long Island.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Lois's memory to an Alzheimer's/Dementia organization of your choice.
