Susie Pilling 68, of Macedonia, Iowa, passed away June 6, 2019 at CHI Health Mercy Hospital in Council Bluffs, Iowa.

Karlene Sue Eckert was born on July 22, 1950 in Council Bluffs, the middle child of John Lloyd and Gladys Doris (Mass) Eckert. Fondly known as Susie by everyone, she grew up in Carson, Iowa and graduated from the Carson-Macedonia High School in 1968. Through the years, Susie worked at Hart Grocery and Council Bluffs Savings Bank. She also served as the secretary for the Carson Presbyterian Church. In 2012, Susie retired from nearly 15 years of work at John Deere in Macedonia (AgriVision) as a service clerk in the mechanics department.

Susie and Larry Paul Pilling were united in marriage on October 18, 1969 at the Macedonia United Methodist Church. They made their home on a farm near Macedonia and were blessed with two daughters, Leslie and Lisa.

Susie was a member of the Higgin's Corner softball team and played recreational volleyball. She received a special award for her years of work with the Jaycettes, a women's civic organization, and volunteered at the Dreamland Theatre in Carson.

Susie enjoyed reading, playing cards, doing puzzles, going on family camping and fishing trips and canning sweet corn each year. Susie was a proud C-M Panther. She enjoyed going to sporting events and took pride in helping to plan the Class of '68 reunions. While working at John Deere, she spoiled her co-workers by making homemade cookies if it was someone's birthday. Susie lovingly cared for her in-laws, Paul and Daisy Pilling, by making meals and seeing to their needs. Along with spending time with her family and friends, the biggest focus during the last 11 years of her life was her three grandchildren. Susie loved every minute she spent with them. Susie was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and a friend to all who knew and loved her.

Susie was preceded in death by her parents John and Gladys Eckert; in-laws, Paul and Daisy Pilling; and brother-in-law Denny Peterson.

Susie is survived by her loving husband of almost 50 years, Larry Pilling of Macedonia; daughters, Leslie Pilling and husband Kirk Eckert of Fallbrook, CA, and Lisa Allen and husband Nick of Macedonia; three wonderful grandchildren, Jackson Paul Allen, Lillian Lynn Eckert, and Daizy Sue Allen; sisters, Judie Boruff and husband Mick of Oakland, IA, and Sandi Sowers and husband Mike of Carson, IA; sisters-in-law, Paula Peterson of Davenport, IA, and Marcia Pilling of Seattle, WA; nieces and nephews; many extended relatives; and a host of special friends.

"When my brother fell and subsequently went to live with my mother in her one bedroom apartment in Carson, there was no longer a place for me to sleep. My brother passed away in February 2018, mom fell in Feb and Susie helped me move her to Missouri in May. For the past three years Susie and Larry have provided support, a roof over my head and gave me food. I am eternally grateful to Susie and her family for being my friend. I miss my dear friend."

"I didn't see Susie much lately, but when I did, she was always .... well, nice! I mean she just exuded nice. She always made me want to be a better, kinder, more loving person. We had a joke - she'd tell me to do something, like "be good", and I'd say "no", and she'd say "mind your elders - I'm six weeks older than you." Good memories of Susie and I will cherish them."
