"I only learnt today of Jeff's passing. I became friends with Jeff whilst he was working and living in Launceston, Tasmania (Australia). We enjoyed catching up for a beer and watching the AFL football where he quickly developed a love of the game, Collingwood was his favourite team. I met my future wife Tamara (a nurse) whilst I was out one night with Jeff when we bumped into some of his hospital colleagues. Jeff came back to Launceston to work several times and each time we would reconnect. I even flew over to visit Jeff at lake tahoe which was great. He was a groomsman in my wedding and flew all the may back from the US for which I was very grateful. Passing on my condolences to Jeff's family. May 30, 1967 - June 8, 2019
Jeff was born in Lincoln, Nebraska on May 30, 1967 and died June 8, 2019 in Ames, Iowa. He grew up in Ames attended school and graduated from Ames High School in 1985. During high school he was an active participant in track and especially enjoyed cross-country running. As a result, he was an avid runner throughout his life running numerous marathons and distance runs in the US and several foreign countries. He ran the Boston Marathon several times.
He graduated from the University of Iowa in 1989 and received his medical training at Duke University School of Medicine receiving his MD in 1993. He became a US Army doctor doing his residency in emergency medicine at Darnell Army Hospital, Fort Hood, Killeen, TX. He served his active duty period at Irwin Army Hospital, Fort Riley, Kansas until 2000. After serving in the Army he focused on serving as a locum tenens emergency room physician at various hospitals in Missouri, Minnesota, South Dakota, California, Nevada, Australia and Guam.
Jeff particularly enjoyed fishing, camping and outdoor activities. He enjoyed his vacation home at Lake Tahoe and spent several weeks each summer at his cabin in northern Manitoba, Canada. He loved his participation with many friends in RAGBRAI each summer.
Jeff is survived by his parents, Ken and Sally Hartman of Ames; his sister Julie (Brian) Coffin of Overland Park, Kansas; nieces Ashley (Grant) Moehlenhoff of Kansas City, Missouri; and Amanda Coffin of Overland Park, Kansas, along with the aunts, uncles, cousins and hundreds of friends he made throughout his life. His love of others, his generous heart and service has left a tremendous impact on all those who know him.
He will be buried at the Iowa Veteran's Cemetery in Van Meter, Iowa. A memorial service will be held at Memorial Lutheran Church in Ames, Iowa at 11:00 am on June 15, 2019. The family will greet visitors starting at 10:00 am. In lieu of flowers, Jeff requested that people donate blood at their local blood bank or the American Red Cross in his memory. Other memorials can be directed to the Ames Education Foundation to support the Ames cross-country memorial or to the family for distribution as he has directed to Christian outreach and veteran organizations.

"The night I met Doctor Jeff: I had taken a bad spill on the ski slopes earlier that day resulting in a concussion and a sore neck. After arriving home from the ER, rather than sitting around feeling sorry for myself, I decided to put on a fuzzy faux fur coat and go out for the evening to meet up with friends. I was ordering myself a drink when suddenly a furry white paw smacked down on the bar and I heard a voice say, " I will have what she's having and I'm paying." I turned in the direction of the voice to discover a fuzzy faux fur white polar bear standing in front of me. Jeff had just won the polar bear swim at Garwood's which was one of his favorite events during Snow Fest in Tahoe City, CA. I thanked this kindred spirit for his generosity and explained that I was drinking "medicinally"due to the events of that day and I had just left the ER while pointing to my hospital bracelet. Jeff replied," That's OK, I'm an ER doctor, I will take care of you." And that he did. He proceeded to watch over me for the rest of the evening which did not turn out to be so fun for me due to the concussion. But in his quirky, fun and caring way he made it turn out to be not so bad. Doctor Jeff, always the life of the party, and dedicated to caring for those in need. I had lost touch with Jeff over the past couple years. I recently sought out to find out how he was doing and was deeply saddened to discover his passing. I wanted to share this story with his family and friends and let you know that he is remembered fondly. "
