"Lit a candle in memory of Betty Massie Vogel"
Betty Massie Vogel, 83, longtime resident of Manchaca, Texas, passed away peacefully Monday, February 15, 2016 surrounded by her loving husband and children.
Born August 28, 1932 to Samuel Jett and Erna Schick Massie at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas.
Betty was the most generous, compassionate, loving soul. She was raised in Kirby, Texas. She was a women's fast pitch catcher, cook, seamstress, gardner, sharpshooter, hunter, and continued on to guide many hunts across South, Texas. She was a beautiful dancer. We loved watching her and Dad smoothly glide across a dance floor. Betty was a Pro Bowler touring the United States with the WIBC Bowling Association. She continued her love of bowling in numerous bowling leagues in Austin, San Antonio, Corpus Christi and nine-pin bowling across Texas. Betty was an Air Traffic Controller at Randolph Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas.
Betty married the love of her life, Clarence in 1952. They owned and operated Diamond Point and the Corral in San Antonio, Texas where they created many lifelong and dear friends which were fondly called "The Diamond Point Gang".
They moved to Manchaca, Texas where they raised their six children and became active in their communities. She made being a Wife and Mom look so wonderfully amazing, beautiful and easy! Her kitchen was her kingdom; food was one of the ways she loved us all and loved teaching that craft to her daughters, grand-daughters, friends, and employees. She loved history and the history of our families. She loved volunteering her time to others. Betty was a 4-H Leader receiving the Silver Spur Award, Sponsor and Supporter of the Travis County Youth Livestock Show. Active in the Catholic Church Parishes of St. Ignatius Martyr, St. Peter's, and Santa Cruz Church. School Board and PTA of St. Ignatius School and Crockett High in Austin, Texas. She was a founding member of the Manchaca Opti-Mrs, and a 20 year Sponsor of the AFTR for Star of Texas Rodeo and Stock Show. Through Betty's work throughout her community, she received many accolades from President Bush, Governor Rick Perry, Governor Ann Richards, Texas Legislators, House of Representatives, and Commissioners. Betty was so very proud of being commissioned as a Yellow Rose of Texas which ironically was her favorite flower and Betty and Clarence's love song, The Yellow Rose of Texas.
Dad's words to her on Valentine's night was "My love for 66 years - my story ...."
In 1968, Clarence & Betty had a garage fire at their home in Manchaca. With no fire department in the area, they rallied to form the now Manchaca Fire Department. Betty was the dispatcher for MVFD for 30 years.
In 1981, Clarence and Betty started the Manchaca Firehall Kitchen and Community Center and Food Catering Specialist in Downtown Manchaca. They catered, fed and were strong active leaders in the Manchaca and Buda communities. Their retirement came after 41 wonderful years at the Firehall leaving behind countless friends and wonderful memories.

""Everyone who calls on the name of Jehovah will be saved." Romans 10:13. It is not the end it is only the beginning. We are human so we will weep. But know that Jehovah God will bring the comfort you and the family will need in time. Celebrate the life and memories. She will only be gone for a short time. Our resurrection will bring all of our loved before us again. We ask that you lay your holy hand on them in their time of need. In Jesus name I ask for these blessings Amen. Greg and Cathy Lewis"
