Basel was born in Easterly, Robertson County, Texas, January 25, 1923, to William Elzie (Buddy) and Elizabeth Nora (Young) Wheeless. He was Nora and Buddys last surviving child. His siblings were James Elzie Wheeless, Thomas Oren Wheeless, Hallice Adren Wheeless, Victor Clydell Wheeless, Agatha Euline (Wheeless) Rose, Sarah Elizabeth Wheeless, William Rogers Wheeless, and Artie Carroll Wheeless.Basel and Frances Magdalene (Stewart: October 9, 1925 July 17, 2004) were married November 22, 1941 in Austin, Travis County, Texas. Basel and Frances had two sons, James Lee Wheeless (October 24, 1942 August 10, 1991) and Basel Arthur Wheeless and his wife Patricia (Purvis) Wheeless. Besides his one surviving son, Art, his four grandchildren also survive him: Dr. Derek Wheeless and his wife Tiffany (Vinyard), Kimberly (Wheeless) Davis and her husband Kenneth, Michael Scott Wheeless and his wife Debra (Garza), and James Chad Wheeless. Six great-grandchildren Brooke, Bret, Brandon, Amber, Alex, Landry and Presley also survive him.Serving with the Second Infantry Division in the European Theater, Basel was a Sergeant in the US Armys Field Artillery during WWII. He retired as a Master Sergeant from the US Air Force in 1963 and from the US Department of Agriculture in 1984.His body will lie in state at Harrell Funeral Home in South Austin. The scheduled visitation is 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., Saturday, August 16, 2014, and his funeral service will be at 1:00 p.m., Sunday, August 17, 2014. Burial will follow at Live Oak Cemetery. Masonic graveside service will be performed by Bob Wheeless. Basels son, Art Wheeless, will officiate the service.
