David Lynn Hammer, 64, of Malvern, Iowa passed away peacefully on June 18, 2019.

David was born May 11, 1955 as the first child to Harold Roy Hammer and Velma (Shannon) Hammer. He attended school K-12 graduating from Glenwood High School in 1973.

Early in his adulthood, David had one daughter, April Lynn. He later married Ann Sorenson. During their marriage, they moved to Harlan, Iowa where they raise their daughter, Johanna. Later David moved back to live in Malvern, Iowa where he worked at the Malvern Elevator and then ventured into truck driving for Malvern Fertilizer. David spent his final years operating Dave's Tire Service until his failing health prevented him from working.

David had a great passion for his race cars. He could be found every Saturday night at the speedway near Pacific Junction, either racing or watching the races. If David wasn't racing cars, he spent time outdoors, animal trapping in the nearby creeks in the hopes of trapping muskrats, beaver or even that one mink he was so proud of.

Although David lived an isolated life, at times he had a wild side. He was soft-spoken and had a very gentle spirit. David was a true friend to those who knew him. His rough exterior did not often show the great man he truly was. His kind soul is now at peace. David will be missed by his family and friends.

David was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Velma Hammer; maternal grandparents, Chester and Mable Shannon; and paternal grandparents, Harold and Ethel Hammer.

David is survived by his daughters, April Lynn Hammer, and Johanna Lyon and husband Chad; brother, Jeff Hammer and partner Espie; sisters, Pat Olson and husband Monte, and Barb Hammer and wife Janie; aunts, Joan Hammer and Georgianna Shannon; nieces and nephews; cousins; and a host of friends.

"So sorry to hear of Dave's passing. I just learned of it this past Sunday 7/28. Dave and I ran together in about 3rd through 9th grades quite a bit. We were neighbors on Hazel Street during elementary school. He, Steve Meredith and I used to explore Tinklebranch Creek and his grandpa's junk piles. As I recall, I first learned about rock and roll music from Dave, Steve and Greg Ross. Great memories. My best to his family and may he rest in peace. Jerry Banks"

Everything I have read here, from being a Hooligans to being Trapper and a smile from the heart you could feel IS so Dave. Till we meet again my friend! RIP Bro"

"Dave was probably the best behaved member of the group of hooligans I ran around with in my late teens. Everyone liked and respected him. Although I didn't see him again after I left Glenwood, I can tell from reading these tributes that he retained his positive qualities throughout his life. "

"In addition to the soot face, Dad said they were sitting there shooting mice with a beebee gun and putting them in a Twinkie box. That cracked my Dad up"

"Dave and my brother, Jake were great buddies back in the 80s. Dave lived with my brother in a shithole apartment in Defiance, IA. I drove from Glenwood up to the apartment to clean it. It took me all day long! Dave was there at one point and he was so sweet. He had very few words but his face told me he was amazed at my cleaning effort. My Mom always said Dave had a ?hollow leg? and could eat $100 worth of groceries in two days, but always was so lanky and skinny! When Dave and my brother Jake lived out in some small farm house they were renting in Glenwood, my Dad had driven out there to see why my brother hadn?t showed up for work. He said when he walked in, there was Dave, his face all black covered in soot from the fireplace. There were many Dave and Jake adventures and my family always loved Dave. You couldn?t ever be mad at him for anything! Hopefully, Dave?s soul met up with Jake?s and trouble will abound again! My brother was usually the lead troublemaker! Dave just quietly and willingly followed along with the high jinks. Dave was a good person with a big heart and hopefully, he has met up with Jake and Billy and the three go riding Harleys. All my condolences go to Daves family. He will really be missed"

"I am so sorry to hear that Dave has passed. I had not seen him in years but he and my brother Mike were best friends when they were younger. I have lots of memories of him hanging out at our house. I know they saw each other a lot when Mike would go back to Glenwood to visit. Unfortunately as happens those times got less often. Mike passed away in Dec. 2009. He had been talking about making a trip back to get reacquainted with his old friends but unfortunately didn't happen. My thoughts and prayers with you all."

I'm sure he and Smitty are catching up and probably discussing how overdue I am for an oil change now that Dave isn't here to do it. Rest in Peace Dave, you have earned it."

"Prayers to all of you. I didn't know David well but what I did know was that he was a very kind man. He would come into Casey's kinda shy and when he got to the counter he was very quiet and the next thing you know there was a smile that would melt your heart. I've not seen another like it. "
