Shirley Maahs Wood
December 10, 1933 - July 2, 2019

Shirley Mae Maahs Wood was born December 10, 1933 in Buffalo Center, Iowa to parents Ralph Ankeny and Ida Margaret Rhine. She married Eldon (Sonny) Maahs July 15, 1956; they were married 35 years until Eldon passed away September 8, 1991. Shirley married Elton Wood November 22, 1997; they remained living in Whittemore until her death.

Shirley attended country school in Southern Iowa, completed 6th Grade in San Diego, CA and then returned to Iowa with her parents where she graduated from Lakota High School. She attended secretarial school in Omaha and then returned to the Algona area where she worked at the Kossuth County Courthouse.

Shirley was a homemaker when her children were young and then worked as a book keeper at Martin's Garage in Whittemore for 10 years and Algona Veterinary Clinic for 30 years. Shirley enjoyed flowers, gardening, crocheting and playing cards with friends. She was also an avid Iowa State Cyclone Fan. Shirley cherished spending time and holidays with her family and grandchildren.

Shirley's Faith was central to her life and her family; she was an active member of St Paul Lutheran Church for over 60 years where she volunteered in many capacities and served on church council.

On Tuesday, July 2, 2019, Shirley Maahs Wood, loving wife, mother and grandmother passed away at the Kossuth Reginal Health Center, Algona. She was 85.

Shirley is survived by husband, Elton Wood; daughter, Judy Vratny (Rich) of Ft Dodge, IA; son, Jim Maahs (Marlaine) of St Paul, MN; grandchildren, who she loved immensely: Amanda Bucy, Ashley Vratny, Ella, Will, Max & Kate Maahs. Shirley is also survived by sibling, Gloria Cruse and Elton's families: Greg Wood, Jeff and Deann Wood, Cindy and Dave Humke, Joe and Valerie Wood. She was preceded in death by her parents, and siblings: Pauline Wilson, Doris Hulme, Dorothy Weaver, Homer Ankeny and Joe Ankeny.
