"Leona and I volunteered for a while at Bethesda Thrift Shop. I so enjoyed going over clothes and talking with her. She was such a kind and gentle person, speaking well of her fellow person. An example to all of us. "
Leona Sophia Postler, 89, died on Monday, July 22, 2019 in her own home with family at her side. She was the ninth and sole survivor of ten children of William and Margaret (Buss) Bernitt. Leona was born April 18, 1930, in Norrie, WI. Our Uncle Arnie liked to tell us she was born in the barn!
Leona was joined in holy matrimony to John R. Postler on December 29. 1951 in Eland, WI. Leona was an active 50 year member of Mount Olive Lutheran Church. Her faith and family were the most important things in her life.
Our memories are many. She loved to cook, and she was never happier than when she was preparing a big meal for her family. She was a fierce opponent during a round of Sheephead; her grandchildren often accused her of cheating! She loved working in her yard and enjoyed a cup of coffee while reading the paper in her screen house. She was an accomplished bowler and enjoyed a game or two into her 80's.
Leona was preceded in death by her husband John, her parents, and her siblings; Marcella Stanke, Evelyn Kopacz, William Bernitt, Agnes Vanderkooy, Henry Bernitt, Arnold Bernitt, Rosemarie Bamle, Delores Hasse and Ruth Shartner. Leona is survived by her three children, David Carpentersville, IL, Steve (Joni) Sun Prairie, WI, and Paul (Cindy) Iowa City, IA, six grandchildren Austin, Will, Harrison, Ethan, Sheila and Don, and 3 great grandchildren, Kamron, Taytum, and Jack.
The funeral service for Leona will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, July 27, 2019 at Mount Olive Lutheran Church, 110 N. Whitney Way, Madison, WI 53705. Visitation will take place from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM prior to the funeral service. Memorials may be made to Mount Olive Lutheran Church, 110 N Whitney Way, Madison, WI 53705. "May Leona's soul rest in peace"
"Mrs. Postler always endured our high school antics with great humor and extreme patience -- from my dubious parking jobs on the premises to our headbanging in the kitchen to Jimi Hendrix cranked to 11. The last time I saw Mrs. Postler was at a graduation party where I was wearing a "MoMA" t-shirt from the Museum of Modern Art. As Mrs. Postler approached, she looked at my shirt and said, "You've always been a momma's boy." Then she just kept walking right on by, no doubt thinking, "He'll never have a comeback for that." And I didn't. But what I should have said was, "Yeah, well, so has Paul." It wouldn't have been funny -- only true. Rest in peace, Mrs. Postler. Ken Kirley, Minnetonka"
"Aunt Onie is especially dear to me not only as my aunt as she was particularly there for me and my mother during my mother?s illness. Love, Susie"
"My sympathy to the family. Her involvement in family and church will be missed. "
"Leona was my next door neighbor for ten years on Blackhawk Avenue. Over the course of those 10 years I had a friend with whom I could share gardening tips and stories, family news, goodies, and things that made us both chuckle. She was very caring and thoughtful?a model to me and many others. "
"Leona was a true treasure and friend. She loved and supported Mount Olive Lutheran Church. Her wonderful LOGOS meals she prepared for years, the delicious treats she brought to the church office for staff, her prayers, stories of growing up and her smile will always be remembered by me. My condolences to her family. Monica Hodgson"
