Carolyn was born March 14, 1930 in Quincy, a daughter of Albert Carl and Wilhemena "Minnie" Bastert Hagerbaumer. She married Herbert Berndt on November 17, 1951 in Salem Evangelical United Church of Christ. He preceded her in death on November 11, 2001.

Carolyn was an avid bridge player over 60 years with various clubs and bridge groups in Quincy, Taylorville, and Springfield, Illinois. Her father introduced her to baseball as a young girl and through the year's she continued watching the sport, often cheering for the Chicago Cubs. Her hobbies included singing in church choir and a traveling choir founded at their retirement village in Texas. The choir became so popular a choral CD was produced. As well, she loved sewing and her workmanship was exemplar. She and her husband enjoyed traveling abroad and throughout the USA, and spent retirement times in Florida and Texas with a home in The Fiesta Village. Proud of their German heritage, both she and her husband were active members of D.A.N.K, and the German Village Society in Quincy.

Carolyn was an active member of the St. James Lutheran Church where she was involved in the Lutheran Women's Missionary League, its choir, served on the Altar Guild, and the funeral dinner committee; when living in Taylorville, IL, she was actively involved with Trinity Lutheran Church's LYDA Ladies, a church group known for their beautiful handmade Christmas ornaments.

She especially loved her time spent with family, and always enjoyed the annual Bastert Reunions, which were often hosted at Camp Point.

She is survived by two daughters: Christine Alger of Quincy, Illinois, and Denise (David) Orr of Goose Creek, South Carolina; a sister, Aleen (Virgil) Mittelberg of Quincy; four grandchildren: Matt (fiancée, Hillary) Alger of Quincy; Melissa (Matthew) Casady of Quincy; Emily (Cory) Hunsley of Edinburg, Illinois; and Ellery Orr of Davenport, Iowa; six great-grandchildren: Amadeus and Gracelyn Alger; Grant Casady; and Ruby, Demry, and Parke Hunsley; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
