Robert P. Howard

There's a party in Heaven!

Robert P. Howard, 94, of Lavallette, N.J., was reunited with his sweetheart, his parents, his brothers and sisters and many friends on Aug. 22, 2019.

Bob was born and raised in Jersey City, N.J. After fighting for our country during World War II and surviving a German prisoner-of-war camp, he returned to Jersey City and became a high school teacher. Bob's career teaching at his alma mater, St. Peter's Prep, spanned four decades. His superior intellect and keen wit enlivened quite a few Geometry classes over the years. The Prep honored him as a "Legend" in 2001. From 1962 to 1988, he also served as evening registrar at his other alma mater, St. Peter's College.

Bob was married to Jean Cobb for 66 years until she entered eternal rest in 2014.

They had five children: Robert, Marian, Kenneth, Jean Marie and Rita; and five grandchildren: Kristen, Danielle, Robert, Amanda and Marguerite. He also had two sons-in-law: Dave Nuse and Tom Henry; and two grandsons-in-law: Chris Bamber and Kevin Dreitlein.

Bob was a loving husband, a wonderful father and the perfect grandfather. He was always delighted to spend time with his grandchildren and loved taking them to the beach, the park and to buy lottery tickets. Bob's astounding generosity extended beyond his family, as he always went out of his way to help anyone he could.

A devout Catholic, Bob attended daily Mass as a child with his mother and again as a retiree. He had to stop because of health reasons after his 91st birthday but he continued to have a meaningful prayer life every day. In addition to his faith, his long life was also thanks to the wonderful medical care he received from his long-time doctor and former student, Gary Cardiello.

He was able to stay at home until his passing because of his devoted caregivers. They included family members Kenn, Jean Marie, and Robert Howard, and Dave, Maggie and Bob Nuse. He was also cared for by "a terrific gang of helpers": Shawn, Monica, Iris and Harrison.

Everyone who was lucky enough to know Mr. Howard was lucky enough.

A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Pio Catholic Church in Lavallette on Thursday, Aug. 29, at 10:30 a.m., followed by burial at Brigadier General William C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Wrightstown, N.J.

In lieu of flowers, his family is requesting a donation to the Visiting Nurse Association Health Group in Holmdel, N.J., or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, Tenn.
