In loving memory of

Lois I. Sutherland
June 18, 1938 - August 17, 2019

Lois Ileen Sutherland was born June 18, 1938 near Siebert, Colorado to Joseph and Mary Estella Wieser. She passed away on August 17, 2019 in Des Moines, Iowa. She had nine brothers, one sister and grew up on a ranch in Kit Carson County Colorado. Lois moved to Linden, Iowa in 1950 and later attended Drake University studying social anthropology.

During her career, Lois worked for the Board of Directors of the Botanical Center. She loved working for a non-profit, helping in the early days of developing this great Des Moines attraction. She later became a writer and editor at Garden.com, then at Meredith Publishing where she assisted with the creation of books on gardening.

Lois was a loving, devoted Mother and Grand Mother. She loved reading, sewing, and AE Chip Dip. She was a staunch supporter of women's rights, the East Side, and the Black and Gold. Lois never met someone that didn't become her friend, a garden she didn't need to improve, or a box of wine she didn't love. She was always interested in learning about new things and exploring new places, and had a sharp sense of humor. She was one cool lady.

She is survived by one brother, three children, and two grandchildren.
