"I was saddened when I heard of the death of Mae June. We always enjoyed the times we were together. I know you will miss her, but she will be remembered with love in our hearts."
Mae June Bullis passed away on Saturday April 23 at the age of 91 from heart complications, following a brief illness. She was born Mae June Millenbah in Gleason, Wisconsin on May 21, 1919, daughter of Clifford (Cleo) and Carrie Millenbah. Mae June graduated from Merrill High School in 1936 and from Whitewater State College in 1940 where she was a member of Sigma Sigma Sigma Sorority. She was teaching commercial education at Eau Claire Vocational School when she met James Farrell (Jim) Bullis. They were married on September 25, 1942 and lived in Chicago until Jim joined the Air Force. In 1947, following completion of Jim's military service, the Bullis family moved to Antigo, where they owned and operated the Langlade Laundry & Cleaners. Mae June was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and was active in the Ladies' Investment Club.
In 1982 Mae June and Jim sold the Langlade Laundry & Cleaners and retired to a life of travel and relaxation, splitting their time between their home in Sun City Center, Florida and their home in Antigo. They also traveled across North America in their RV, often using Mae June's pursuit of the Bullis family tree as a guide as to where they should travel next. Her thorough work resulted in volumes of information on the Bullis and Millenbah family trees going back 10 generations to the year 1630.
Mae June and Jim were very active in Sun City Center where they were members of Prince of Peace Catholic Church, played bridge, walked and swam on a regular basis and traveled wherever their local travel club might take them, including trips to most of the European countries, China, Australia, New Zealand, Mexico, Venezuela, Chile, and Peru. In 2009 Mae June and Jim relocated to an assisted living apartment in Trinity Village in Milwaukee to be closer to their children and grandchildren. Jim continues to reside at Trinity Village.
Mae June had six children: Jim (Mary), Jack (Marijo), Pat (Clyde) Colwell, Bob (Tina), Bill (Terri), and Peggi (John) Page. She also has 17 grandchildren: Katherine (Bullis) Downing, Michael Bullis, Karen (Bullis) Beers, Susan (Bullis) Gotschewski, Stephen Bullis, David Bullis, Carrie (Janasak) Cargile, William Janasak, Christopher Janasak, Amy Bullis, Timothy Bullis, Lindsay Bullis, Lisa Bullis, Laura Bullis, Jamie Jo (Page) Mason, Jessica Page, and Jack Page; and 9 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Dr. Jack Millenbah (Merrill), and her eldest son, Jim Bullis.
Mae June loved having large family get-togethers and fostered a closeness in the family which remains today across all three of the Bullis generations regardless of where they live and how frequently they are able to see each other. She encouraged family camping reunions, where she would play cards and games with even the youngest as she passed on to them the joy of playing cards or board games and making puzzles; and taught them how much fun these activities can be with friends and family. Mae June was an avid and excellent bridge player throughout her life, playing in women's and couples' bridge clubs wherever she lived. She played the piano beautifully and encouraged her children to develop an interest in music. Mae June also loved to dance and she and Jim were active participants Antigo's Colonial Dance Club. She loved to garden, keeping beautiful flowers inside and out wherever she lived. Mae June was a modest person, always surprised when someone she barely knew remembered her name and then commenting "My Mother knew what she was doing when she named me...no one ever forgets the name 'Mae June'...not just 'Mae' and not just 'June,' but 'Mae June!'
Services for Mae June Bullis will include visitations at Bradley Funeral Home in Antigo on Friday April 29 from 3:30 to 8 p.m. with a parish wake service at 4:30 p.m. and Saturday (April 30th) from 9 to 10 a.m. A funeral Mass will be held at SS. Mary & Hyacinth Catholic Church on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. with Rev. Jeremiah Worman officiating, followed by a committal service in Queen of Peace Cemetery in Antigo.
