Mr. Merrill M. Myers, age 86, died Sunday, November 19, 2006. Born in Boston, MA, on August 27, 1920, son of D. Merrill Maitland and Edith Andersen Myers, Merrill was raised in Des Moines, Iowa. He attended Sioux Falls College (South Dakota) and then trained at Curtiss-Wright Institute of Technology of Glendale, CA to learn aircraft design. He landed his first job with Curtiss-Wright Aircraft Company in Columbus, Ohio. Following service in the Navy during WWII, he continued work on aircraft during during the transition from propeller to jet propulsion. He was Chief Design Engineer for Solar Aircraft Company in Des Moines, Iowa, and designed machines for Ingersoll Miling Machine Company of Rockford, Illinois and for Corning's Glass Company's Albion, Michigan plant. He finished his professional career at Muskegon's Campbell Grinder Company, where he, among other things, helped design the machine that produces telescope mirrors at the University of Aizona. Merrill was a life-long American Baptist and active in the First Baptist Church of Muskegon, where he sang in the choir and served on the board of Trustees. He introduced his children to a love of nature, camping, fishing and photography. A gifted father, Merrill was an example of patience and good sense to his children. He was also a mentor to engineers who worked for him. He and Ellen offered one another unfailing support.
SURVIVORS
Married for nearly sixty-five years to Ellen Newell Myers, Merrill and Ellen raised 3 sons, Rev. Richard (Elizabeth) Myers of Rochester, NY, David (Kathleen) Myers of North Muskegon, Daniel (Patricia) Myers of Keizer, OR; 6 grandchildren, Sarah (Scott) Myers-Semple, Susanna (Jon) Margalies, Emily (Matt) Kutolowski, Christopher Myers, Joanna (Mike) Buboltz & Amelia Myers; great-grandson, Alexander Semple; sister-in-law, Dorothy J. Welch of Pasadena, TX; brother, Otis W. Myers of Marshall, MI.

Saturday, December 2, 2006, 11:00 AM at First Baptist Church with Rev. John Brown & Rev. Richard Myers officiating.
