Dr. Leslie James Mathews
September 8, 1931 - June 12, 2019

Dr. Leslie James Mathews, 87, of Conway, South Carolina, formerly of Danville, passed away Wednesday, June 12, 2019.
He was born September 8, 1931 to Port and Grace Stucker Mathews of Danville. He married Mary Manning of South Carolina.
Les graduated from Danville High School in 1949. He then attended Iowa State University where he was a member of Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity and graduated in 1952. Upon entering Iowa State University, Les joined ROTC and after graduating, spent two years in the United States Army.
He subsequently obtained his Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from Cornell University in New York. Les built a large animal veterinary practice, serving several states, including New York, Florida, Missouri, South Carolina and Summer Street Animal Clinic in Burlington, Iowa, before returning to South Carolina.
Les was a very loving father and a talented vet. He enjoyed listening to Willie Nelson.
Survivors include his wife of Conway; one son, Michael (Jo) Mathews of England; two daughters, Dawn Mackey of Des Moines, and Melodi Zimmerrman of Atlanta, Georgia; six grandchildren; one brother, Dwayne (Georgia) Mathews of Danville; two nieces and one nephew; several great-nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents.
The memorial service for Dr. Mathews will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, September 8, at the Congregational United Church of Christ, 105 E. Michigan, Danville, on what would have been his 88th birthday. Rev. Carl Vass will officiate with military rites by the Veterans of Foreign War Post 10102, Burlington. Immediately following the service the family will receive friends for a reception in the church basement.
