Augusta Ida Verthein

Augusta Ida (Nunemacher) Verthein, 93 of Altura, died Thursday, September 12, 2019 at Lewiston Senior Living. She was born on May 19, 1926 to August and Viola (Papenfus) Nunemacher. Augusta grew up in Hokah and graduated from Houston High School. She married Kermit Verthein on October 16, 1945. Together they farmed in Caledonia and Hokah until moving to Altura in 1960 and farming there until their retirement. Kermit and Augusta enjoyed traveling with family and friends. She especially enjoyed their trips to Europe, Alaska, Hawaii and wintering in Mesa, Arizona. Augusta was incredibly talented and enjoyed making porcelain dolls, ceramics and 3-dimensional paper tole art. Grandma Gustie made each of her grandchildren a complete ceramic nativity set. Each of her family members will cherish the handmade items gifted to them. She always took care of her family, she baked and cooked treats for them and many others, and she never forgot a birthday.

She is survived by her children, Dennis (Carolyn) Verthein, Candace (Steven) Kohner, and Steven (Melissa Odegaard) Verthein; 11 grandchildren, Bradley (Heather) Verthein, Brenda (Jon) Parsons, Jay (Amanda) Verthein, Kjersti (Mark) Anderson, Kollin Foss, Jennifer (Donny) Skappel, Ben (Greta) Verthein, Shawn (Michelle) Kohner, Stephanie (Gabe) Vargas, Jason Kohner, and Jennifer (Kevin) Bronk; and 23 great-grandchildren; brother, Irvin (Jackie) Nunemacher; in-laws, LuEtta Fruechte, Donna Amsrud, Janice (Donald) Warren, and Warren Wiedman; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Augusta was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Kermit; and numerous brothers and sisters-in-law.

A Funeral Service will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, September 20, 2019 at Our Savior's Moravian Church, in Altura with Rev. Greg Behrend officiating. Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m., Thursday, and one hour prior to the service, both at the church. Burial will be in the Bethany Moravian Cemetery.
