The Very Reverend Robert George Preston
November 18, 1924 - October 2, 2019
Reverend Robert G. Preston went to be with the Lord on October 2, 2019. Robert was born to Reverend John J. and Maragret Paterson Preston in Tecumseh, Michigan on November 18, 1924. He was preceded in death by three siblings, Mary E. A. Preston, Margaret P. Mills and James E. Preston. Father Preston is survived by two nephews and a niece, Richard (Janet) Mills and family, John (Lavonda) Mills and family and Nancy Mills and family.
The family moved from Tecumseh, MI to Alma, MI in 1930 and remained there until 1938 at which time the family again moved to Wayne, MI where Robert graduated from Wayne high school in 1943. Following graduation Robert joined the Royal Canadian Airforce where he served four years. After his military service Robert attended Carroll College in Waukesha, WI receiving a Bachelor's Degree in English in 1950. He then attended Nashotah House Seminary in Nashotah, WI receiving a degree in Divinity in 1953. This began his career as an Episcopal Priest.
Robert's first assignment was a small parish in Vancouver, Canada serving a Native American population. From Vancouver he was assigned to a large Episcopal church in the Chicago area where he was an assistant priest. He then served at the Cathedral in Peoria, IL for several years where he became Dean. In 1969 the Bishop assigned him to Jacksonville, Fl where he served as Principal of an Episcopal school.
In 1977 he was again moved to Hallandale Beach where he served as Priest at both St. Ann's and St. Andrews Episcopal Church for the next 18 years. Father Preston retired in 1995 but remained active at St. John's Episcopal church in Hollywood, Fl. He spent his remaining years living in Hallandale Beach where he enjoyed cooking, entertaining friends, gardening and traveling.
Father Preston served for many years on the Community Service Counsel of Broward County. He was an accomplished organist and a 50+ year member of the American Guild of Organists.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00AM, Saturday, October 12, 2019 at St. John's Episcopal Church, 1704 Buchanan Street, Hollywood, Florida 33020. In lieu of flowers Reverend Preston would have wished any donations be made to the aforementioned church.
