"Connie, my heart is breaking for you and the boys and thier families. I still cannot believe the person I call one of my best friends and a life long friend is gone. I smile t ok know he is in a better place telling God that if your talking tour not riding hard enough or he is pulling one of his famous maneuvers on him. Please call me for any thing I am here for you like you and joe have always been there for me. Joe was the glue that held all of us together in the cycling group. He was someone I looked up to and admired and can honestly say there is not a day that goes by where something comes up that reminds me of something we did. I will miss him, his smile and laugh, the way he folded his maps and his crunching the numbers. You both are a gift from god that I have been blessed to be able to spend time with. I am one of the lucky ones to have had the chance to know joe. He was rare and a special person in our lives. Thank you for inviting me in. God will enjoy his company and stories. Wiford"

DeWayne Dusenberry wrote on Oct 20, 2019:

"To Caleb. Sunday at our small group we talked about how things don't often happen just by chance but how God moves us and directs us. He so completely orchestrates our lives. We talked about how we don't always understand, but if we're looking for it we can see his hand in it. I like many, saw Joe warmly greeting people on Sunday, I joked with him as I came in that morning. That was kind of usual, what wasn't typical is that I ran into Joe Monday night at Walmart. I never see him outside of church. I know this wasn't by chance. We took a moment to joke and laugh together again, but we talked about you,Caleb being up front. Joe was so happy and proud, He was beaming about it. I don't think it was chance at all that God wanted me to remind you how proud he was. I'm sure there were other points and joys in his life, but that's my small part, to remind you he loved you and was proud."

Kristine Twigley wrote on Oct 19, 2019:

"Joe and his beautiful wife Connie crewed for Team iRONman for RAAM 2019 and Joe was co crew chief with me. I couldn?t have done it without them and Joe was fundamental to making sure I took a break from driving and retained some sanity along the way, even when he had already driven most of the day in the follow vehicle. He kept Ron safe for me and it saddens me that the biggest fear I had on RAAM has ended up happening to Joe. He had the biggest heart, most generous spirit and a real energy. I remember his first email after he joined our team was that he apologised in advance that he would get super excited and might annoy me with all his excitement. That could never happen, his happiness and positive outlook on life and the love he shared with Connie was infectious. Joe, you are and will always be an inspiration to us. I wish we could all be back in the states to be by Connies side. We have her in our daily thoughts. My heart goes out to Connie and her family and friends, the USA crew and our KIWI crew who are all devastated by this loss, and the RAAM and broader cycling community. A massive loss. Love from Kristine and Ron and Team iRONman. RIP Joe. I?m going to miss you. Thanks for making Rons dream come true. "

"Together with Joe and others, I was a member of Sarah Cooper?s RAM team, which gave me the opportunity to meet and live with Joe for a week. Since then, I?ve followed his long-distance bike races and family posts his Ironman-wife, Connie, puts on Facebook. For me, Joe is the kind of person one is drawn to: he has a magnanimity of spirit that inspires the best in all of us; always considerate of others feelings?even under pressure of crewing a multi-state, multi-day race when everyone?s nerves can get a bit frazzled; his tenacity and persistence as an athlete motivates his friends to do their best. I know he was active in his church, and a true servant to his God and His creations. Although I only knew him briefly, I will forever cherish the memories I have of him and Connie. "
