Jack E. Gelfand
September 3, 1919 - October 30, 2019

MONROE TOWNSHIP - JACK E. GELFAND passed away at the age of 100, on Wednesday, October 30, 2019, at Village Point Nursing Home, Monroe Township.

Born in Manhattan, NY, Jack resided in Albany County, NY, before moving to Monroe Township 20 years ago.

He was a U.S. Army Aircorps veteran, proudly serving during WWII. In the Army, Jack earned the rank of Captain.

Jack earned his Ph.D in Economics from New York University, in 1957. During the course of his academic career, he taught at Lehigh University, Ithaca College, Temple University, and State University of New York at Albany. He taught at SUNY Albany for 20 years and earned the status of Professor Emeritus. Jack was the author of numerous books and articles that were published in various academic publications. He also presented many papers to Academic Associations.

Jack was probably best known among family and friends as an entertainer. As a singer he accompanied himself on guitar and sang songs in at least 4 languages. He had a repertoire of over 300 songs. Jack along with his wife Alice as a partner danced, choregraphed, acted and directed in many local productions. Jack also enjoyed managing the talent show at Monroe Village.

Additionally, Jack wrote many short stories about his life and family.

He was predeceased by his wife, Alice (Milbauer) Gelfand, in 2008.

Surviving are his two sons, Steven Gelfand and his wife, Nadya, of Bronx, NY, and Michael Gelfand and his wife, Nancy, of Purling, NY; five grandchildren: Amy Gelfand; Mary (Gelfand) Adams and her husband Marty; James McGahan; Sarah Gelfand and Anna Gelfand, and two great grandsons, Meyer and Miles Adams.

A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, November 6th, at 12:45 PM, at Brigadier General William C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 350 Provinceline Road, Wrightstown, NJ 08562, under the direction of MOUNT SINAI MEMORIAL CHAPELS, East Brunswick.

"The members of the Department of Economics at the University at Albany SUNY were saddened to hear of Jack's passing. He is remembered fondly by many of the senior faculty including Distinguished Professor Kajal Lahiri who jointly published a paper in 1980 with Jack: "Government Policy Dynamics in Structural and Reduced Form Estimation," (Jack Gelfand, Kajal Lahiri and T.D. Osborne). Empirical Economics, 1980, 205-217. By all accounts he led a long and eventful life. Rest in peace, Jack."
