Services for Arnold Clifford Heng of Cylinder, Iowa will be Friday November 8, 2019 from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at the Cylinder Fire Station . There will be a Rosary at 4:30 p.m.
Visitation for Arnold C. Heng was held Friday, Nov. 8, at the Cylinder Fire Hall. Palo Alto County volunteer fire fighters are invited to participate in a "last call" for Cylinder's former Fire Chief.
Arnold Clifford Heng was born March 27, 1949, in Emmetsburg, the son of Kathryn Margaret (McNally) and Clifford Selmer Heng. He was proud of the fact that he is a direct descendent of the first white child born in Palo Alto County. Arn attended school in Cylinder and graduated from Emmetsburg High School in 1967. He continued his education at Emmetsburg Junior College (Palo Alto University), graduating in 1969. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Iowa in 1971.
On April 10, 1981, Arnold Heng and Kathleen Muller were married in Algona,Iowa. The couple made their home at Cylinder in their black and gold Iowa Hawkeye house. Arn was employed at Cylinder Lumber before working as an insurance adjuster for Farmers Mutual Insurance Company. He later worked at Quad County FS, Star Energy, ASI, and Stateline Co-op. He also helped farmers with fall harvest.
Arn was a volunteer fire fighter with the Cylinder Fire Department for 40 years. He held all offices, including, and especially, Fire Chief. He also served as Palo Alto County Fire Chief. Arn was elected to Cylinder City Council and served as Mayor of Cylinder until the time of his death.
Arn enjoyed people and it is said he didn't know a stranger. He promoted the annual Fourth of July celebration, and helped shoot off fireworks for many years. After retirement, he served watermelon during the celebration at Cylinder Park. He was a member of St. John Lutheran Church, Depew.
An avid Iowa Hawkeye fan, Arn lived his life in black and gold with tiger hawks on the side. He was pitcher and captain of a summer softball league team and he coached Little League. He loved to play cards
Arn planted a garden every year and canned what he grew, for his family and friends. He will be remembered for making fresh fruit preserves, baking cookies and making candy. Twice each year, Arn sent boxes of canned goods and preserves to the nuns at St. Rose Convent and The Villa in LaCrosse, WI.
Arnold C. Heng died Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2019, at Palo Alto County Hospital, just hours after being re-elected Mayor of Cylinder. He was 70.
Survivors include his wife, Kathy; his son, Ty and Nicole Heng of Mallard; siblings: Roger and Susan Heng of Tacoma, WA, William and Susan Heng of West Des Moines, Janice and James Stillman of Emmetsburg, and, James and Sherrel Heng of Sewanee, TN; firemen, friends and relatives in Cylinder and Emmetsburg, and in Barnsville, MN.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Cliff and Katy; and an infant brother, Edward.
Joyce Funeral Home in Emmetsburg was in charge of arrangements.

"Arnie, through his communication and kindness, has made me feel welcome and special to live in this in this area. My sister and nephew frequently travel from ND to IA to visit me, and they got to see Arnie most visits over the last decade. Arnie's kindness to the people close to me, is how he made me feel special. He kept track, and frequently asked me about their lives, and he shared his canned goods. In our family, canned goods = love. I will miss the candy that he made/shared every holiday season - even though he always forgot to put the nuts in it. I will miss the cold beer conversations, his candor, and his company. "
