A Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m., Thursday, November 21, 2019 at Holy Family Catholic Church in Emmetsburg. Burial is in St. John's Catholic Cemetery. The family will greet friends from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Wednesday at the Joyce funeral home. A prayer vigil service will be at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday.
Roger Leo Hanish was born October 27, 1941, the son of Leo and Edna (Grethen) Hanish in Fort Dodge, Iowa. He was a 1960 graduate of Laurens High School where he excelled at sports and academics.
Roger married Phyllis Poeppe, and to this union three daughters were born.
Roger loved farming. He enjoyed working the ground and caring for his crops and gardens. He owned Casey's / Country Store in Laurens for 33 years. Roger was an entrepreneur of several businesses. He served on the City Council. He was a member of Holy Family Parish and the Knights of Columbus, Jaycees, and the Fire Dept.
In 1987, Roger was married to Linda Rae Buettner (Wendi, Pam and Nathan and their children: Samantha, Michael, Mason, Savannah, Sierra, Somer and Carter).
Roger loved his family and was proud of all of his children and grandchildren. He enjoyed boating, fishing, golfing, riding his Harley and watching Fox News. He loved sports and was a member of the "Over The Hill Gang" softball team. Rog umpired and refereed for 25yrs. He drove the school bus for 15yrs. Rog was a coin collector. Some of his favorite times were family trips and vacations. More than anything, Roger loved spending time with his family.
Roger passed away Saturday, November 16, 2019 at Mercy One Hospice House in Mason City, IA.
Left to cherish his memory are his three daughters: Dawn Corley and her husband, Pat of Emmetsburg, Tamara Griffin and her husband, Scott of Laurens, IA and Kim Heddinger and her husband, Pat of Emmetsburg; (Son) Rodrigo Alcaraz Garay and his wife, Pamela and their sons, Rodrigo and Santiago; 10 grandchildren: Mitch Corley (Brittney) of Ankeny, IA, Matt Corley (Kirsten) of Johnston, IA, April Birdsall (Drew) of Urbandale, IA, Toni Hyde (Joshua) of Oakland, IA, John Griffin of Spirit Lake, IA, Mark Griffin of Laurens, IA, Trisha Griffin of Des Moines, IA, Steven Heddinger of Ayrshire, IA, Cody Heddinger of Ayrshire, IA and Cameron Heddinger of Nevada, IA; seven great-grandchildren: Connor Griffin, Olivia Corley, Kellan Corley, William Hyde, Ella Corley, Rohan Corley and Theodore Hyde; six sisters: Evelyn Snavely of Tipton, IA, Lois White (Larry) of Laurens, IA, Margaret McKim (Fred) of Arnolds Park, IA, Jeanne Cowan of Milan, IL, Phyllis Anderson of Laurens, IA and Kathy Ball (Jerry) of Lester Prairie, MN; brother, Dean Hanish (Daneze) of Lincoln, NE, sister-in-law Mary Hanish of East Lansing, MI; and friend, Judy Richardson of Emmetsburg.
Roger was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Linda; brother, Wayne Hanish; three brothers-in-law: Dennis Anderson, Bob Snavely and Ron Cowan; two nieces: Theresa Bonnstetter and Mariann Snavely; great-nephew, Nic Proctor.
