Mary L. Hewitt, 89, of Allison, Iowa, passed away Thursday, November 21, 2019, at the Rehabilitation Center of Allison, with the assisted care of MercyOne North Iowa Hospice. She was born on June 28, 1930, in Butler County, Iowa, to Minno and Celia (Jepsen) Folkerts. Mary graduated from Bristow High School, and Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, where she received her teaching certificate.
Mary taught at rural Butler County Schools for five years. She was united in marriage to Wayne O. Hewitt on December 23, 1951, at the Evangelical United Brethren Church in Bristow. Together they had two children, Stan and Wanda. Mary and Wayne lived and farmed together for thirty-five years in the Bristow area, until they retired and moved to Allison in 1990.
Mary was a former member of the Bristow United Methodist Church for seventy years, and the New Hope United Methodist Church in Dumont. She was a current member of the Allison Congregational Church. Mary was active in many aspects of the church throughout her life, including the women's groups and the young adult groups. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary.
Mary enjoyed reading, spending time at the Allison Library, sewing, gardening, canning, cooking, going on fishing trips to Canada with Wayne, and attending her family's events and activities. She was a supporter and advocate of the American Heart Association.
Mary is survived by her son Stan (Connie) Hewitt of Bristow, daughter Wanda (Randi) Thomas of Mason City, grandson Nathan (Laura) Hewitt of Glenview, Illinois, and their children Oliver and Vivian, grandson Brandon Thomas of West Des Moines and his children Mazzi and Bodhi, grandson Nick Thomas of Mason City, granddaughter Chelsi (Jesse) Carlson of Mason City, brother-in-law Skip Merfeld, along with several nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents Minno and Celia, husband Wayne, sisters Ruth Wunsch and Alice Merfeld and nephew Jay Merfeld.
